I just traded for a 223 AR will be Reloading some Ammo...The AR has a 20 inch Barrel with a 1 in 9 twist...The Rifle Powder I have are Varget.... 3031 be loading 55 Grain soft point Bullets...Which Powder would you guys Recommend for this Sierra Bullet ? Thanks for any of your Help.

Varget gives me good accuracy with 50+gr bullets in .223. But it is far from being a powder that meters well through most powder measures. But 3031 is the same way, if I'm not mistaken, as far as metering goes. But 3031 is a faster burning powder that may yield better results with 55gr bullets. 3031 will probably also be more economical.

Whatever powder you can find in the stores. Look in your manual or go to the powder manufacturer's website and make a list of the powders that have data for the bullets you want to shoot. Then choose from the ones in stock.

My preferences for .223 (16 1/2" bbl) are AR-Comp, Varget, and BLC(2). AR-Comp gives the best velocity for the least amount of powder, but is only slightly easier to meter than Varget. BLC(2) is by far the easiest to meter. :)

I've only had my AR a few months. The first loads I did I used "Tac". Then I got some VihtaVuori N-530.I'm still working on the loads to find what the rifle likes.

If I was a better shot, I might figure that out a bit quicker.

I've loaded some Hornady 55 gr fmj , Sierra 69 gr match king ,Privy 62 gr fmj, Sierra 55 gr SBT Gameking .Just trying different bullets to see.

My rifle is a Model 1 Sales upper, 20", 1:9 twist. So far, nothing has been really BAD...just testing to see what it wants to shoot.

.223 powders.

I have had good luck with win.748, IMR 3031 and IMR 4320. All make accurate ammo after proper work up. I loo in my re-loading manual and find the center dose from minimum and maximum dose of powder. I see how the rifle patterns with the same bullets climbing up the load scale from mid to maximum in .2/10 of a dose climb. . The tightest groups are you favored doses for that powder.

Of the 2 powders you listed I would probably use 3031 for volume loading. I use Varget for the .223 ammo I run through my bolt action .223 rem rifle.

If you can find powder give H335, CFE223, BL-C(2), W748, AA2230, TAC, AR-Comp and RL-10x will all give you very good results. I use mostly H335 but would be very happy with TAC or CFE223 too.

I've tried a variety of powders in 223 Remington rifles including an AR. The best powder I've found for 77 gr. bullet weights is RL-15. The best one for 55 gr. bullets weights has been BL-C(2).

Out of those two, I'd go with 3031. Save the varget for .308. Plus it seems like 3031 out of an ar gives a throatier report; sounds cool. Maybe I'm just nuts though.
