AR .223 to 300 BO ?

My next build is 6.5 Grendel. My logic is thus:

Short Range: .458 SOCOM
Medium Range: .300 BLK
Long Range: 6.5 Grendel

Mags: Unimag- shared across all calibers (when these become available).

IF these calibers and builds work out, these three AR's will allow me to sell off a bunch of other guns.

As to the OP, I have been using unmodified aluminum milsurp mags interchangeably with .458 and .300 with zero issues so far.

Supernaut, an AR10 type rifle pretty much fills all three of those rifles in one. And one rifle that fills all three roles means you'll actually have the right rifle on you at the right time.

I'm right there with ya!

I already have a FNAR in .308 and my next investigation is going to be the AR10 platform.

p.s. the expensive and fiddly nature of the FNAR is what started me investigating AR's in the first place.

Supernaut,

Check out the DPMS GII series. Normally I shy away from DPMS, but I've read their .308 rifles tend to be of higher quality than their AR15 style rifles. They've got a lot on nice innovations that keep them closer to .308 size than the usual bulky AR10 variants. The basic 16" carbine model weighs about the same as a typical bolt action.

An AR 10 is a lot more rifle than an AR 15, a long with that is size and weight.

jmorris,

I was mainly speaking to the idea of having a .458 SOCOM, .300BO, and 6.5Grendel to cover a range of needs. A .308 carbine covers all three of those bases pretty well in a single rifle.

I agree though, .308 carbines are bigger and heavier. I was pointing out though that the DPMS GII isn't really THAT big or THAT heavy. It's 7.25lbs and 34.25" collapsed which includes an excessively long break/flashhider. Comparing that to Colt's web data, (this sound heavy to me) they list a 6920 at 6.9lbs and it collapses to 32". I don't really believe a 6920 to be that heavy, but if it's so, it is surprisingly close. Granted a loaded .308 20rd mag feels like a brick.
