Please keep in mind, no one is looking for a scientific test here, We just dont want to bring one rifle down with the ammo choice.

Because of this thread http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=378730 I will be doing an UNOFFICIAL test/review this weekend.

1 AR
1 AK

Everyone has an opinion, as do I as to which platform is the "Best". I am simply looking to find out which platform is "Best for me".

We will be doing a write-up over at spentcasings.com

My question is this

All things considered on both rifles, what ammo should we use? I shoot the military classic wolf stuff in my AK because it's cheap. My brother who is bringing his AR out doesnt mind the wolf stuff and is not partial to any particular ammo.

Would it be fair to use:
military classic 124-gr 7.62
military classic 55-gr fmj .223

What are your thoughts?

I would test with both brass and steel cased ammo if you have time.

For brass, I would suggest Winchester's 7.62x39mm and perhaps their Q3131A 5.56mm, or Lake City 5.56mm, or at worst Remington UMC .223 55gr or Federal American Eagle .223 55gr.

For steel case, Wolf is the obvious choice but I would use their standard stuff instead of "Military Classic," because the standard stuff seems (based on reading, mostly) to be slightly higher quality. I would again go with 123gr in 7.62 and 55gr in .223.

i would keep it this way

Same Brand and type but different calibers ONLY

example:
---------------------------------
Wolf Performace:
.223 55gr FMJ
7.62x39 122gr FMJ
---------------------------------
Wolf Military Classic
.223 55gr SP
7.62x39 124 SP
---------------------------------

Keep it as close to the military loadings as possible.

Get some Federal XM193, Winchester Q3131A, and perhaps some M855 or SS109.

For the AKs, some Wolf MC, surplus Yugo stuff (or the surp Romanian that's out there now), and maybe some Norinco ball, if you can find it.

As Z-Michigan stated, does anyone else think we should stay away from the wolf classic military

also what is the significance to testing with both brass and steel cases?

thanks

My understanding is the wolf military classic 124gr jhp uses the 8m3 bullet which is supposed to have better terminal preformance than the other wolf offerings. What exactly are you testing, reliability, accuracy, terminal ballistics? All of the above?

Brass cased ammo is usually made more carefully and with better components. Wolf and other steel cased ammo is made as cheap as possible. It goes bang, but isn't the most accurate. For any accuracy testing, compare apples to apples. I would use the steel case as a reliability testing, since it supposedly creates issues (which I think mostly disappeared with the polymer coating) and supposedly damages AR15 extractors.

I shoot wolf out of my AR and AK's so I would love to see it used in the comparison your doing.

It's really going to depend on what we can get our hands on. Time, Ammo, stuff to shoot at....

I've been buying Hornady TAP 5.56

It's expensive though.

Great ammo though.

For range use, Winchester Q3131

Wolf out of the AR did not fair to well. The AK ate it up.
I will be getting all details up soon. Thanks for everyones help.
