I've decided to go to a gun show in Phoenix the middle of August and I've also decided to look into investing in an AR platform.

I am looking at an flat top AR10or some other model in the platform of a .308. in a heavy bull barrel.

I'm not that familiar with the AR platform and I'd like some advice on the brands to go with....brands to stay away from. Maybe some idea of what to expect in price, etc.

I'd also like some opinions of .223 versus .308. but I'm leaning toward the "reach out an touch ya" .308.

I hope that I am not resurrecting on old topic but I did some searches and couldn't find what I am looking for.

BTW.......has anyone heard of or dealt with a Scottsdale, Arizona firm of American Spirit Arms Corporation?

Anyway....any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have a DPMS LR-308T with JP trigger and am very happy with it. After scope, bipod, and trigger it cost about $1400, I'll probably spend another $75 or so. It is comfortable to carry but quite a bit heavier than an AR-15.

Even with a 16" barrel I am getting 2650 fps with 150 grain bullets. It has very tolerable recoil and noise, I've only had one get my attention and it was my fault. I was going to hold out for the LR-308B which comes with an 18 inch barrel but this was in stock and a great deal.

I went with the LR-308 because it is very accurate and .308 has more energy and momentum at 450 yards than .223 has at the muzzle. If you are so inclined you can get lower capacity magazines for hunting.

AR-15 rifles, magazines, ammunition are all cheaper so if cost is a big factor the LR-308 may not be the best choice. Also AR-15 is a common platform so you can get parts from many manufacturers, the LR-308 uses some AR-15 parts but some have to come from DPMS.

I am saving for a LMT Defender for closer range and more rapid shooting so you might wind up with more than one :).

If you ever decide to go with an AR 15, stay away from the olympic plinker plus. The lower price may catch you eye, but i heard the recievers are poorly made.

My advice is, if your going to get one get a good one. With guns like that its better to go quality over quantity. But both are nice if you can afford it. Good companies include, Rock River Arms, DPMS (some people have problems but they can make a nice rifle), Stag Arms, theres more that i can't think of. Really good companies include LMT, Armalite, and Colt. Colts are expensive and i think are overpriced.

Thats the way to go...mine loves silver bear. Shoots it 100% and about 2" at 100 yards with iron sights and a sandbag.

I think for a 308 the DSA FAL's or DPMS 308 selection is going to be a great rifle for both accuracy and quality. I have two DMPS AR-15's and they are fantastic rifles.

Before making any hasty decisions involving the AR platform, see to your 'due diligence' and learn all you can so you can make an informed decision. Places like AR15 and M4C are loaded with information but do the searches first before posting repetitive questions on either of those 2 forums.

Do your research ahead of time. The options are limitless and so is the cost. Ask your self what you want, how often you'll be shooting, and what you'll be shooting.

If you go with a standard ar-15 platform, you can add different caliber uppers like 6.8 and 6.5 for more hitting power and still be able to use a 5.56 upper or even a .22 lr upper for cheap shooting. I feel that unless you need .308 I'd go AR-15 over AR-10 just about any day because there are just a ton more options.

Changing an upper is as simple as popping out two pins, taking the upper off and putting a different one on. Do some research on the 6.8 spc and 6.5 befor you buy .308. They can also use slightly modified ar-15 mags.

You can get some decent info off of ar15 but most on those sites are basement heros. Just be careful because there is more crap than good info on those sites.

well...

...If you limit yourself to the 7.62 go with a FAL...AR-15 platforms beauty is in the weight, length, and ability to swap uppers...IMHO...Of course after you buy the first one...yer' screwed anyway...You'll want as many as you can get... rauch06.gif

Why would you tell someone to stay away from something that you just "heard" about

The Oly Arms Plinkers used to have cast receivers, but now they are forged.

Lest you disparage cast receivers, Ruger also uses them, although generally of the steel variety. Provided they are in spec, you will never notice a difference aside from a slight texture difference.

Okay so because i don't have a personal expierence with it doesn't mean i can't say what i have heard about it? Isn't that the point of a forum?

I'm replying to let everyone know I did read the posts and I appreciate everyone's response.

I've done a lot of research and I never realized just how extensive and confusing all of the AR information is out there.

Right now I am pretty much committed to a DPMS but I am still tossing up the .223 or the .308 barrel in a bull barrel and a flat top receiver.

My biggest concern is that I am unfamiliar with some of the calibers that the
.223 and the .308 respective interchangeability has to offer.

I'll sort it out but I wanted to thank those that took time in responding. :)
