A buddy of mine just returned from afghannyland and was kind enough to give me a bunch of his now unneeded gear. Among the treasure trove (sp?) of goodies was an M-16 carry handle mount that looks exactly like this: http://www.nightvisionplanet.com/v/vspfiles/photos/Aimpoint-10174-2.jpg

The mount has no markings on it. It is identical to the pic of the aimpoint model, down to the different finish on the screw. It shows no sign of being used. My friend did not mention if it was issued to him or if he bought it somewhere. He did have an aimpoint mounted to his M-4's flat-top, so I'd venture to guess that it was issued with his m-68 but was not needed as he had an A3 upper.

I attempted to mount this on my m-4gery build from a J&T kit (A3 w/ removeable carry handle) and the screw hole on the mount is a couple of mm's forward of the hole in my carry handle. I'm not sure if the handle or the mount is out-of-spec. Has anybody ran into the same problem?

I'll probably just drill a new hole in the handle and drill/tap the mount to match, but I'd figured I should ask first to see if someone has an easier fix.

Hopefully he purchased it himself, or else you have received stolen US goverment property... never underestimate the resolve of government beancounters.

Thanks for the head's up. My understanding is that the supply people will not take the stuff that is not on their list to take back. For example, if the sight was issued with multiple mounts, and he returned the sight attached to the rifle, they have what they want and will refuse to take the extras that are not needed.

That said, there is absolutely no markings or serial number, so I'm doubting that it was issued.

Just guessing; but the mount may have been built for a non-detachable carry handle since a 30mm ring is a fairly cheap mounting solution if you want to mount to a flattop.

Thanks. I did more googling and it appears that the A3 handle does differ dimensionally from an A2 handle. I have no clue why someone would do this, but it looks to be the case.

Time to dust off the drill press, I guess.

don't use the carry handle mount if you plan to shoot a lot and don't like rezeroing all the time
