On most early to later production AR rifles, the only feed ramps are two short grooves in the barrel extension, where the locking lugs are.
On late production rifles, these ramps are extended down into the aluminum upper.
I seem to recall this was added to uppers when the M4 was being designed to prevent the rounds from nose-diving and jamming against the flat on the upper just below the barrel locking lugs.
I had several defective magazines in which when chambering, the bullet would hit the flat area below the barrel extension and would push the bullet back into the case.
Just because the feed ramps extend into the upper, doesnt mean they're M4 feed ramps. The first post in this thread at arfcom should clear any confusion about standard/extended/M4 feed ramps.
