This 'buddy system' is great, when you have a buddy nearby, even then its difficult.

Does anyone know of any tricks to remove the two piece handguards that come stock on an AR rifle without a friend? I tried wedging a screwdrive in there to hold down the handguard locking spring, but theres just too much tension and I don't want to wreck the lips of the handguards.

Any tips would be appreciated.

they make a handguard removal tool that is easy but ever since i have had ars and all my time in the army i have used my had to push down the delta ring and then remove the bottom focusing most of the pressure on the bottom then take out the top like above. it is sometimes tuff in new guns, but over time it should get easier.

They make a tool you can buy to do it, but I just do it by hand.

The easiest way for me is to sit on a couch or a chair with butt of the rifle on the floor and pistol grip to my left. I hold the bottom handguard in my left hand, near the bottom and wrap my right thumb and forefinger around the ring. Then I just tilt the bottom of the ring down to the left and then pull up and out on the handguard. Then I just spin the rifle 180 and repeat.

thanks jorg, that advice worked well!. Still it was extremley difficult but possible this time around. Getting them back in seems to be far easier than getting them out...

I've seen the tools before, just havent ordered one before. I think its defenitly something worth having in your AR toolbox :D

On a new gun, the spring can be extremely stiff requiring a massive amount of finger/hand strength to get it to clear. Sometimes some are easy. Like was said above, over time as it gets worked - it will soften up a little.

The only other thing I can think of is if the handguard is a bit long forcing you to depress the delta ring to the absolute max.
