just wondering about the new AR's coming out in 6.8. just bought a m4 in 223 and will use it mostly for target, but i'd like to get into hunting. just wondering if i should of got the 6.8 instead. also how readily avaiable is the ammo now
thanks

6.8SPC is legal in more states for deer than .223/556, and it is more effective as well. I recommend getting an AR-15 in 223/556, and if you need one for one of the above reasons, a second upper in 6.8 SPC.

If you are considering an additional upper, in a larger cal, you may want to consider the 6.5 Grendel. Its performance is nearly that of 308 and they say recoil is about 1/2 of the 308. It is a really "up comming" caliber and holds some very good potential. It appears that it has about the same ammo availablity as the 6.8, and is much more capable than the 6.8. Wolf is even making the 6.5 Grendel (Gold line), not sure they are making the 6.8, that will help in keeping the price down and making it more available in the future. The uppers are about the same price, so it is more a question of caliber and desire.

similar to what Zak said, start with a 5.56 and if you want to go big then look at 6.5 grendel and 6.8 SPC. I'd lean towards 6.5 grendel due to the availability of ammo, bullets, brass, etc.

First post here guys so sorry if I am intruding.
It really depends on what you are hunting. The 6.8 SPC is readily available and uppers are made by more companies than the Grendel.
The 6.5 shines over the 6.8 after 400 meters in wind drift and drop, however I deem that outside of my hunting game range. The 6.8 has better terminal performance than the 6.5 from 100-300 yards.

White Oaks makes a decent 6.8 barrel as well as Ko-Tonics, and Stag-RRA are following suit. Wolf also carries 6.8.

6.8 will never be as popular, widely used, common, or affordable as 5.56. And that goes for parts that work with a 6.8 (like a bolt for example) as well.

If you can deal with that, have at it. It's not worth it to me.

The 6.8 has better terminal performance than the 6.5 from 100-300 yards.

That quote was true in 2004 when the cartridges were introduced, but with the 6.5mm 123 gr sierra match king, the 6.5 grendel has equal if not better performance 0-300 yards and beyond 300 there's no contest.

There are more bullet weights offered for the 6.5 Grendel compared to the 6.8 caliber, so I'd go Grendel.
