AR Magazine questions...

It is true, though, that the lightweight aluminum mags were originally intended to be disposable.

Yes, but this "intent" went-away the second the first Vietnam grunt was issued his 6 magazines and told that there weren't any more coming.

How many times do we read these famous words "what I heard"? Where did you "hear" all this?

GI mags must meet military specs while retail magazines don't have to answer to anyone. GI mags have been issued in the tens of millions (hundreds of millions?), and some have survived from Vietnam days and are still pulling service in various armies. They may not come in tacticool colors, but they work.

If anyone wants to buy & use beefier magazines, I have no problems, but throwing out ridiculous assertions that original ones can't do the job is just advertising ignorance.
I heard it from the Gunfighter Cast podcast on the Gun Rights Radio Network, from a guy who actually used them in combat.

I am not saying the GI mags are total crap, I am simply saying technology has given us something better.

i have fn and colt 30 round standard gi mags. never had any problems with them but again i only use them for range use never any heavy use.

A video to show what upgrading a USGI follower with a MagPul follower will do for your magazines.

FWIW-after getting the hang of it, took me 'bout 1 minute per mag to replace my old followers (this without a pair of needle nose pliers).
My old USGI gray film finish mags still hang slightly (but don't nosedive), but you can flex the magazine by squeezing it and it pops up. I'm sure while using, and after the new follower makes a few trips up/down the mag it will be fine.

My black Teflon coated mags show no sign of hanging at all after installing MagPul followers.

basicblur, I would skip the Magpul followers and just get CMMG SS followers. They seem to be a little smoother and drop right into most magazines just like the Magpuls. Both require quite a bit of fitting to go in a Lancer L5, but it is worth the trouble IMO.

:)

Balrog: You have received many replies for many manufacturers of AR15 Magazines, and while I have not used many of them, I nust tell you of another manufacturer of AR mags that I consider the finest made mags on the market today. They are made be Brownells and are available both in 20 and 30 round capacity. Take a look at them in their catalog or on line and try one...you will be hooked too.

They work great and are extremely solid. The top cover for them is a little useless unless you plan on storing them or hiking long distances knowing you wont have to reload quickly, but its a nice little extra piece to have if you choose to use it.
