Gents:

I'm looking for recommendations on a quality AR optic. I'm not overly concerned about a CQC optic, although I do want something that will allow me relatively acceptable quick acquisition over short distances. I also want something that will allow accurate shooting in the 300-400 yard range. I'd like to stay under $350. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I'm trying out a Leupold Hog VX 1-4x20 non-illuminated scope right now. The low end is actually 1.4x. With the Aero Precision Extended mount, the pair are pretty lightweight at 11 or so ounces. Before this, I had an EOTech 517 installed.

Barring the interesting wording on the reticle, the thick posts are pretty dang fast to work with short range targets. The center section of the reticle is a bit thick for tiny targets far away, but work pretty well on small, medium, and large targets so far.

Anyway, the scope can be found for $220 to $230 almost everywhere, and the mount can be found $75 to $85, too.

I have a Nikon P223 3x32 mounted on an AR works real well for me and well in the price range you posted

I have a Vortex Viper PST 1-4×24 on my AR and it is awesome. But its a bit over your stated price range.

The Vortex Strike Eagle is in your price range, it's a 1-6×24, illuminated, with a 5.56 ballistic drop reticle. As i understand it, the glass isnt quite as nice as the Viper line, but better than the bottom-range scopes.

They also have a Crossfire 2 1-4×24. Glass quality is nowhere near the Viper, but it's far from useless. The V-brite reticle has an illuminated dot in the center that makes for rapid acquisition in low light. It retails for about $250.

All of these have a true 1:1 1x. At low mag, you can run both eyes open, and its almost as fast as a red dot, just a bit less forgiving of eye position.

Sounds like you want a 1-4x. It's since been replaced with an Aimpoint PRO but when I first needed to scope my AR, I just used what I had, a Leupold VX-II. Would make an excellent general purpose optic.
