My EBR disease is in full swing now and I've been working on my rifle a good bit lately.

It started as a 16" A2 from Del-ton. Most recently, I swapped the A2 upper for a flat top and replaced the YHM 2 piece quad rail with a Daniel Defense EZ CAR 7.0; of course safely protected behind Magpul XTM panels. The standard A2 flash hider was replaced with a YHM 5c2 flash hider/comp and I finally got around to replacing the Hogue grip with a very nice Ergo Ambi Suregrip. Last but not least, I topped it off with a Primary Arms multi-reticle clonepoint in front of a Samson flip up BUIS (that I want to replace with a fixed rear sight).

Spec list:

Del-ton 16" rifle kit
Spikes lower
YHM 5C2 flash hider/comp
Daniel Defense EZ CAR 7.0 handguard w/ Magpul panels
Bill Springfield 4.5lb trigger w/ speed hammer mod.
Samson rear flip up sight
Ergo ambi Suregrip
Magpul CTR stock
Primary Arms multi-reticle clonepoint

Just a few more loose ends to tie up now. Sling and attachments, fixed rear sight.. *sigh* :D

Another for the wallpaper pirates.

very pretty

now, a suggestion to improve overall function: get a milspec BCG (if there isn't one in it already), and stake the extension (if you haven't already). Really nice setup, though. I plan on making a similar "flashy budget build" on a Del-Ton kit, but I have a 20" KISS rifle to make first.

Oh now that is just too cool. If it were a midlength, it would be my dream AR. Question: how fat in your hands do the Magpul rail covers feel? I've used KAC style covers and the just felt too fat, and later settled on ladder covers. I'm curious about my options.

nice work. its similar to my set up.

to Seanie!: ive got the same magpul rail covers halfded is showing and i would say they feel a bit "fat". it adds a noticeable amount of mass on all sides of the quad rail. i think i would prefer the ladder type covers.

happy shooting

Seanie!:

I was kind of concerned about the "fatness" of the XTM panels. I used ladder covers on my YHM rail before I changed it, and while I liked the grip it gave, the forearm looked and felt on the skinny side. I tried YHM's covers in the past and they were HUGE!

The Magpul panels were a nice surprise. They add a minimal amount of bulk, feel like a standard handguard if you put them all the way around. I didn't feel like I was getting enough grip with the whole rail covered, that's why I staggered them 3 to a side as seen in the photo. Now the grip is something like grabbing a giant tire. The slots between the panels really grab your hand without getting fingers stuck in there.

These panels don't seem to regulate heat as well though. At the range yesterday, after 80 rounds (slow fire) the covers were warm. Not hot yet, just warm like I left the gun laying in the sun for a while. The DD rail, though, looks awesome with smoke pouring from under the handguard (I oiled the barrel good before I put the rail on)!

Another option to explore that I used on my other rail would be to use ladders all the way around but on the bottom rail use ladder cover on the forward part of the rail and full cover on the rear half. I trimmed and rounded the edges of the full cover to ease hand transitions and it provided a nice reference point and solid handhold toward the balance point of the rifle. Give it a try, you'll be surprised.
