OK, on my Ar-15 the make of the lower (PWA) is stamped right on there but I didn't see where the upper had any such markings. But then again I didn't look very hard. Also I read somewhere that PWA only made lowers which makes me wonder where the rest of it came from. Any pointers? Sorry if the answer is really obvious, I just bought this gun. :D

more help

I had looked here once and checked again, but there are no matching markings on my rifle.

Both my Bushmaster uppers aren't marked either. If you look on the barrel around the front sight base on a Bushmaster,it says something like (BM 5.56 NATO) but the upper itself is unmarked.I believe mostly all uppers are the same way.

Ah Ha!

OK, I looked at the front sight base and there it said:

S, very small RI(with circle around it), 3

It also has A2 flash hider and bayo lug.

Wow, long subject but the short version is..

Most uppers receivers are not marked. The main exception to that is LMT uppers that were made within the last year or so. Mega also marks their upper receivers. Most Colt's have a "C" forged into them but that is not a hard fast rule.

The truth is, most makers use a variety of sources for their upper receivers.

What GLOCKT described is a barrel marking. Colt, BM, FN and Model 1 sales some companies that come to mind that have unique barrel markings. Some companies like RRA do not mark their barrels.
