i planned on reloading for my new ar15 so i went to the range and shot and when i pick up my brass and started looking at it i looked like the rim of the case was damaged is this normal. I will try and post some pics later

No - not normal to be so mangled. Looks like deep punch marks from the ejector, and the rim is badly chewed up from the extractor?

223 brass isn't too hard to find - look for better cases.

Reloads or factory? Why is the rim damaged that way would be my question. You could use them, but they would not last long. I would want to solve the problem causing it. Need more info. I have guesses, but that's it.

Who made this rifle? He aught to be made to fix it! The bolt is NOT supporting the entire case head, my guess it's defective-not machined correctly. If it were mine, I would stop shooting it until it's fixed!:scrutiny::uhoh:

No offense ...but those answers are all wrong.

Thats called "hard extraction"....the bolt is coming back before the pressure drops enough to free the case...the extractor hook is tearing the rims.

What kind of AR do you have?

And I use Remington brass all the time...its good for at least 3 reloads (at 5.56x45mm pressure levels...60,000 psi)...but don't reuse those...don't even fire the gun again to you figure out whats wrong.

+1
Some sort of problem with excess gas pressure, or an incorrectly machined bolt carrier unlocking the bolt before the pressure has dropped sufficiently for extraction.

Any chance it's a shorty with the gas port drilled out to get it to function?

Regardless, I agree it's a gun problem that needs to be fixed ASAP.
Don't worry about the reloading until you get the gun fixed.

RR665, you may be right. If you are, that is serious! To displace the rim THAT much by hard extraction, I wonder if the bolt is even locking? A very dirty chamber that grabs and holds onto the shell could cause it, but I doubt it would even chamber the next round.

It a a brand new gun those are the first 25 rounds i fired and i was also having a mag problem i have the magazine problem fix 2 of the 3 orlites i have are bad. I went this morning and fired 20 more and the ftf has quit since i am only using the one magazine. also the case rims look like they are getting better is it possible that it needs broke in it does not appear to be short stroking because the bolt stays open on the last round.

They don't generally short stroke from being over gassed...but it can happen (just not often).

I don't think break in is the problem...ammo may be.

Buy NHMTG mags...they are cheap and they work (GI followers)

it is a gun i have put together i bought the complete upper from garrison mfc which i told me when i bought it is was a contential upper or some company in flordia who makes FN uppers and it is a 16" chrom-moly wilson barrel

Well, that right there might be your problem.

Only FNH makes FN uppers.
They don't farm out work to "some company in Florida".

Seems like it almost has to be an enlarged gas port, defective bolt carrier, or very rough chamber to me.

Do the empty cases have any rough places or rings of bright brass showing on the sides indicating a rough chamber?

Any chance you can talk to Garrison mfc about fixing or replacing it?
Something there just ain't right.

I could be way off base here but you said it is getting better. Did you clean the gun before you shot it. I always clean a new gun before I shoot it. I have always heard that you need to clean a new gun before you shoot it to remove all of the heavy oil the manufacture puts on to protect it. Could the oil have caused the chamber to be sticky and causing the cases to extract hard and as you keep firing the gun it is getting better because of less oil. Just a thought, I hope you get this figured out and fixed soon.

a pic of the bolt face might be helpful too

i hold with those who favor returning it to garrison and telling them to fix their crap.

no i did not clean it i just put a little remoil on the bolt carrier and bolt and the chamber

what all should i clean?

Clean the bore using a bore guide and then use a bore mop to make sure the chamber is good and clean as well.

Clean the carrier & the bolt while you have it out. Clean the area it rides in real well. Oil it all back up.

If it is a issue with being dirty, that should take care of it. If it is a mechanical issue, it will continue to show on the case rim.
