All,

To this point I've pretty much been an AK guy, but I've got an itch to get an AR lately. My question is if you have an AR with a detachable handle and a front sight, do you have to remove the front sight if you wanted to remove the handle and use a red dot scope? Probably a dumb question, but my AR experience = nil.

Thanks!

No, the front sight is not in the way, and as glock36 points out, it is a good thing to have the front sight visible through the bottom of the glass as a backup.

Here are some pics through an Eotech on a flattop AR with a fixed front sight. You don't even really notice the front sight if you're looking through the center of the glass, but if you drop your eye down to the bottom third of the glass you can still use the front and rear irons. The most popular configuration seems to be a fold-down rear sight and a fixed front.
