Now that the AWB doesn't exist-at least for now-you've decided you're gonna go for the AR style rifle-with all the politically incorrect trimmings. But there's a lot of manufacturers out there that make a good product. Who do you go with-and why?

Rock River.

I have yet to hear a bad word against them. There are people who prefer Bushmaster, Armalite, or Colt, but no one is bashing Rock River. Rock River has earned an LEO contract, so their quality is up to their standards. A friend of mine who is a big AR fan, has been building all of his new rifles on Rock River receivers.

On top of all that, they're reasonably priced.

You're moste likely to get a good gun from these people than not. All have excellent reputations and use standard parts. My preference would be a Rock River (or Armalite) carbine with their mid-length handguard barrels. Excellent ergonomics.

I am getting ready for my first AR build also. I will be staying as close to Rock River products as possible.

I have been given good advice and read enough about them to have full faith.

Good Luck!

Just stick with the name brands and you will do just fine. Once you start going with the lesser known or "problematic" brands you will definitely take a loss with resale values. ASA is a name that comes that comes to mind. I don't know of a lot of folks willing to spend money on a used ASA upper or complete rifle.

Your budget will pretty much dictate who you will go with. DPMS and Olympic Arms are on the low end of the spectrum with Bushmaster, Rock River and Armalite in the middle. Colts will usually cost you bit more. Personally I think you are buying just the brand name with a Colt. Not to mention the other inconveniences that some may have such as sear blocks, non standard fire control pins and non standard front takedown pins. I can get a Bushmaster that will do every bit as much as a Colt for a couple hundred less.

I think your biggest decision will be what model to get!

I've just pre-ordered my first AR15 and decided to go with a Bushmaster A2 w/ 20" heavy barrel from AIM Surplus. I'm not planning to scope mine, so the detachable handle was a non-issue for me. Not knowing too much about AR15s I based my decision on the mostly positive reviews of Bushmaster rifles. The Rock River ARs are supposedly very good as well.

Normal recommendation is 5.56mm, and that is usually what ARs come chambered in, Rock River uses the Wylde chamber which is a compromise between the two, it's a pretty good choice. :D

Happy Bob,

I picked it up on the evening of 9/14 as my way of saying a big UP YOURS to Feinstein, et al.

It's a barely used Colt AR-15A3 Tactical Carbine (flat top). And yes, it's sweeeet. :)

I just added a DPMS ambi safety to it, since I'm a lefty. I'm looking into getting 30mm mounts and a BUIS, and mounting my PK-01V red dot in it.

Bushmaster, and here is why:

4150 barrel steel, chrome lined bore/chamber, and chambered for 5.56mm. You are not guaranteed to find any or all of these on a Rock River. Other than that they get good reviews from me though.
