The faster a twist rate the longer a bullet you can use.

The faster a twist rate the more "bullet imbalance" will show on the target.

That is why a lot of competitors are using 1:7.7 or 1:8 twist barrels instead of a milspec 1:7 twist. The 10% slower twist rate of the 1:7.7 twist has won a lot of matches compared to 1:7.

You really need a 1:7 only for 90 grainers. The 1:7.7 and 1:8 twist barrels shoot 80 grain bullets like a house on fire. So far the 80 grain bullets dominate the 600 yard line so well nobody feels the need to go heavier (and the ballistics available from the small 223 brass aren't there yet with the powders available for 90 grain bullets).
