AR Upper Receiver Question

I was wondering where the difference comes in when it comes to upper AR receivers? I've seen a many different ones on Gunbroker and sites of the sort, and was wondering if there were any functionality differences between diferent manufactuers, and if so what kind? Thanks a bunch.

Just talking about the upper receiver itself, and ignoring the barrel and charging handle...
You have:
forward assist vs no assist
A1 sights vs A2 sights vs flattop vs removable handle
brass deflector vs no deflector
mag release fence vs no fence

There are other differences/options, but those are the main ones.

Some manufacturers will have all of these options, others just a few.

I understand the different options that are offered, what im mainly wondering is if you were to take 2 different uppers with the same options on them and compared a name brand, such as a Rock River Arms which prices at $160 for an A2, vs a non name brand, which you can find on Gunbroker for around $80, why what would be the differences? Thanks for all the help.
