i remember searching a few months ago and found that someone makes a complete a1 20" upper that includes no brass deflector, tri grips and tear forward assist, the perfect a1 replica but i lost the site. i thought it was bravocompanyusa.com but can't seem to find it. if i saw the name i might recognize it. i believe it didn't come with bolt or charging handle and they also had different configurations like the car15 and xm177 with 16" barrel.

i was hoping to buy it all built. the lower i will build but i'm not confidant in building the upper. thanks for the info.

yeah i saw that one, i want one with forward assist.

I think Henderson is selling a kit that is A1. Check that out. All authentic parts as issued.

i think i'm better off building my own. is Nodak-Spud recievers fairly good? i'm going to buy the stripped upper and lower. wow can't find the handguards anywhere besides used. and guess i have to use the 20" pencil barrel.

Fulton Armory may have some of the parts you need:

They used to sell complete M16A1 style uppers, but apparently don't anymore.

Also check the AR15.com Equipment Exchange. Search for 'retro' parts. They also have a Retro forum to find info about the older variations and parts identification.

I built this rifle using NOS (New, Old Stock) parts that I scrounged from the AR15.com EE.

Like this?

This was a gunshow find. When I found it it had a2 handguards that a promptly replaced. I've since found the correct pistol grip. Now I just need the correct FA. More pics in the sig.

Surplus uppers. They offered a complete rifle as well, called the "Legacy," IIRC.
Fulton seems to make their own early M16 and later M16A1 style upper receivers. I'm not positive about what they used on the Legacy rifle, but I believe the receivers were new manufacture and the barrels were NOS 1/12 twist Colts which used to be extremely common. At one point you could buy the complete Legacy rifle or just the Legacy upper.

I purchased one of Fulton's stripped M16 type receivers (no FA or deflector) for one of my carbines and it's very nice. I can't see any difference in quality between it and my NOS Colt receiver. The Fulton was also black and matches the color of modern A2 type AR15 lowers, where the Colt was more gray and had to be Gunkoted to match the color of my lower.

I was thinking they were suplus uppers because they were only available with 1/12 bbls - they are no longer listed, and the supply of NOS upper assemblies and bbls has dried up.

Nice to know their slickside uppers are nice, I plan on using one for my AR45 - if I could ever get an oly .45 bbl and bolt (or a complete upper).

My fave is the 604 upper, no forward assist (A1) or case deflector lump (C7). wish I could find a 604 that used the A2 rear sight as I saw something like that a few years ago, prolly a prototype.
NoDakSpud has good stuff, Les Baer offers a flat top without FA, need one for the 16 inch midi 7.62x39 on order for the last month. Krochus's rifle looks just like the ones I was issued in the early 80s, and one I have now cept my has a later A2 lower, well that and the lack of the happy hole, can't afford any part of that.

Luckily, I don't have to build one! I just picked up this 1980 SP1 in a trade for a 1911 I had about $800.00 into. I also got the standard accessory scope as well as all packaged accessories, box and papers.

BTW, it has never been fired..well till this coming weekend. :D

krochus that is the exact look i'm going for but like mention tear drop fa. nice deer. i saw you post this in another thread. iron sight? i used iron sights with my ar15 on the first deer i shot, barely missed it but wasn't a good hit. got the clip on youtube lol. under low light i could not see the iron sights at all so mounted a scope. i did get one the last day but didn't have my camera.

trigga, I believe this is the style you are looking for?

found 2/3 down the page here.

Couple of years ago I bought several surplus A1 uppers, all 1 in 12 twist so limited a bit on ammo, bought them cause the price was right and they allow a rifle to weigh what many Mforgerys weigh.
Good place to learn is the "Retro" forum over at arf.com, luckily the sub-forum draws few fan-boys or trolls, there are some who are Colt obsessed but they are nice about it.
Reading the stickied topics will get you on your way.

wow thanks orlando, hope the atlantic one is the complete kit minus the stripped lower.

It is but with those kits the barrel will ne parkerized as they are " in the white" and FSB will need drilled and pinned

Nodak Spud receivers I have found to be VERY high quality and far more true to the retro design than anything else out there, period, dot, the end! I'd even take a NDS lower over a Colt with their odd size pins in current lowers and 2-headed screw in the older models. I currently have 2, one is an A1 lower and the other is a 601 series slick side. I almost have parts collected to build both an early 603 XM16E1 and a 604 Air Force M16 and I'll once again be going with a Nodak Spud lower as well. My two I already have mated with my USGI uppers, (one a 603 and the other one a 601) perfectly and even a little on the tight side that I like. Things can always loosen up with age and use but they never get tighter...I mean look at Pamela Anderson as a prime example! Anyways, here's a few pics of my 603 and 601.
