Hi all,
I am slowly building an AR rifle piece by piece. So far it has a:
CMMG lower
DPMS lower parts kit
Magpul MOE Stock
Dsa upper
DPMS basic charging handle
CMMG Bolt carrier and Bolt assembly
CMMG Mid-length freefloat tube.

My goal with this rifle is to have a short rifle that is capable of shooting out to 500 meters. I realize that the power at that range will not be spectacular but I would like to keep the shot group within 6" at that range.

My problem? I am not sure on what barrel to pick. I have looked at this black hole barrel:
http://www.blackholeweaponry.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=70

except from what I have seen that is on the more expensive end of barrel producers. My question?

What other options do I have that are accurate, 16" carbine gas system, and threaded on the end for a comp?

Also, When I put the charging handle and bolt into the upper receiver it binds like crazy. I'm talking almost impossible to pull out of the upper occasionally. When i put just the bolt in and push it back and forth it slides perfectly into the buffer tube. When the charging handle is in by itself it also slides without any problems.

So what gives?

get a 16"sdm WOA barrel, I love mine and I can attest to the accuracy. 1/2 moa for sure

looking for cheaper barrel alternatives with carbine gas system lengths. I want to hide the gas system under the free float tube.

I didn't see any other AR related posts in your profile, so I feel compelled to ask whether you know that the charging handle rides in a channel above the bolt carrier group and not directly on top of & in contact with the BCG? If u turn the upper receiver upside-down, you'll see the two cutouts that the ears on the charging handle fit thru to locate it in the channel. You seat the handle, then drop the BCG in and u should be good to go.

If you do know this, then I don't know why your BCG+handle is binding.

Just because there is no AR related stuff in my profile does not mean I am exactly a newbie to the platform, 6 years of Army service....13D In the Arty.

:D

I realize it rides above the bolt but I am confused as to why it would slide smoothly by itself, and the bolt slides smoothly by itself, but when they are both together it binds like no other.

Your reading a bit far into it I think, the black hole barrel is certainly an option but as a new builder I am not sure where else to look for quality barrels. I do not want to spend any more than about 250$ on the barrel.

and perhaps now that I think about it 6" really is a little circle at 500 yards, so lets say 10" That would be a solid 2MOA.

well my bro has had gret luck with yhm barrels.. he is dead on at 350.. is a pretty good piece for the price, but all my barrels are in the 400.00 range

Well, grabbed a buddies charging handle and things worked perfectly. The difference was very small and we are still not sure why the original one is not working.

I think DPMS is your problem :neener:

But seriously, I recommend a BCM Gunfighter MOD4. Haven't even touched my stock charging handle since I got this baby.

We will see how Midway treats me with the ordeal, I am a pretty poor college student right now which is why I am piecing this build together. (it's also fun!)

I'm still lost on the barrel decision...

Hey, I feel ya. I'm in college too. The trick is to eat less and spend the money on guns instead! ;)

Oh btw, I see that the Black Hole wesite says that the chambers to the barrels are M4 feedramps; have you checked your upper receiver to see if it is milled out as well? If you don't know what I mean, I found this to site to be pretty helpful in clarifying certain things when I first got my AR:

Best of luck on your build!
