I was browsing CMMG's online catalogue and I found an ad for a CMMG "Custom" 308. Price listed is $1399, page 35. Ad says two stage trigger, comes with Magpul PRS stock, free float railed forend, 18" barrel and available in tan, green or black. DPMS magazine pattern.

I noticed that the barrel and chamber are "WASP" coated and I believe that is a CMMG specific feature.

Looking on CMMGs website I dont see any comlpete 308 rifles, or even uppers for that matter which makes me wonder if its a CMMG built lower with a cheap (think blackthorne) upper reciever, bolt and barrel assy.

The price is good, almost too good, if its a quality built gun by CMMG as they are a reputable company from what I understand.

Anybody have any info or opinions on this?

I have not seen a CMMG .308 AR platform rifle in person. To equip the rifle with a two stage and a PRS at that price point I would think they had to cut corners someplace else.

With that said I have shot five of the different platforms in .308, they all functioned very well and were accurate. Pick your poison. If you are seriously looking at the .308 platform I would recommend ArmaLite's AR10, or if the budget allows the LMT MWS.

Call CMMG and talk to a rep. If I have ever had a question about one of their products I have called and a real live person answered. Fit and finish on my CMMG products coupled with the lack of problems has certainaly made me a believer that they put out good products.

Nah, I had an Armalite last year. Bought it brand new. Nothing but problems with that gun. I sent it back to Armalite once and it functioned a little better afterword but it never really ran very good. That gun is someone elses problem now. Plus I didnt much care for the $50 magazines as much as it didnt care for feeding ammo.

Im not looking at any Armalite rifles anymore. Im not really looking for another 308 AR per se, but for that price above I started getting the itch again.

I believe that their .308 rifle is, for the time being, sold exclusively by CDNN. Someone posted a few weeks ago about the same rifle and buying it from CDNN. While I'm sure CMMG can answer questions, you might also try CDNN.

Various .308 AR platforms have come down in price lately. An Armalite AR-10 should only cost you $1250-1300, and the Rock River LAR-8 is as low as $1000 or so new, all of these on Gunbroker. To confuse things Armalite has reintroduced "Eagle Arms" and a few shops are selling an Eagle Arms branded AR-10, which costs less and has fewer features (not chrome lined, for instance) and a shorter warranty.

In addition to CDNN, Cheaper Than Dirt has them as well. I was in their FTW store last week and they had one that I held. Pretty damn nice and yes the price is very reasonable. Seems this is exclusive to a few places and is NOT found on their website. If I had the funds, I'd be all over this.

Looks pretty nice. I'd consider it if it came with a chrome lined 20" barrel and had provision for mounting a front sight somewhere other than on the handguard.

henschman, the WASP treated barrel has durability comparable to chrome, better corrosion resistance, and is likely more accurate than all but the best chrome-lined barrels. CMMG has a fact sheet on WASP, but it's just another form of nitrocarburizing (aka nitriding) similar to "Tenifer" or "Melonite".

The ad says it has a "two stage trigger" as well. I can only assume that it would be the CMMG 2 stage they advertise on their website. That only sweetens the post if so. Im not a big fan of the PRS stocks but that would be an easy re-sell.
