I've been keeping an eye on one of our department's AR's buffer, since last time I cleaned the rifle. I noticed that the roll pin that holds the rubber bumper onto the buffer had backed out by about 2mm.

Once I noticed it we got it seated flush with the hole. I just checked it again and it's backed out again. To my knowledge (99% sure) it hasn't even been shot, just riding around in the car.

There's a jeweler in town that works on guns too. I'd like to have the day shift take the rifle to him to fix, but am I worrying too much about it? Or could this cause a hiccup (or worse) while firing if it backs out more?

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

interesting. never even heard of this, as i've never had a reason to take the buffer apart. i don't even know what holds the pin in. (I assumed just friction, as it's a roll pin) curious what you figure out.

Wonder if it's an ultra cheap buffer, if so I'd replace it. Are all the ARs the same brand?

No doubt if the pin backed out enough it could hang up in the receiver extension.

Our main two patrol rifles are RRAs. They probably only have about 800 rounds through them. I'll try to get a new pin ordered and we'll go from there. Thanks for the input everyone.

Update:

I looked at Brownell's for the part and I didn't find it during a couple searches.

I called Rock River Arms direct and they said they'd send us a new complete buffer, since they don't have the spare parts on hand.

Sounds like a warranty issue. Never heard of a buffer self disassembling during my time in an infantry battalion.
