Why was the 7 lug "daisy bolt" used for the AR15? What are the advantages in comparison to a 2 or 3 lug bolt?

Where there any rifle/MGs that used the daisy bolt before the M16 family?

I don't know the exact details but the "8" lugs are supposed to lock up better/more consisant for better accuracy. It's also fairly strong.

The was another rifle that used the "8" lug set-up but I can't remember it's name.

It only has to cam (rotate) the width of the largest locking lug. More lugs, smaller lugs, less bolt rotation to lock/unlock, which is better (at least in theory as long as its just as strong, which it isnt)
