I just got an AR15 with a flat top. I don't have anything on it at the moment. I was told that for shooting 25-50 yards that a red dot sight would be adequate. I don't plan on spending over $100, but will if necessary. What is the deal with a red dot sight? Do I need irons as well? Do they come with mounts and will they fit on my rails?

Thanks in advance for the help!

For a range gun/plinker you don't need iron sights, if you don't mind possibly having to stop shooting to change batteries. For more serious applications, irons are nice.

When I decided to getmy first flattop I asked about scopes, and red dots at the gunshop. The individual I spoke to asked me at what ranges Im shooting mostly. My responce was of course 50-100 yards, his responce was then you dont need anything beyond a red dots cope really.
Its nice sometimes to be able to see where the exact impact of the round is, but then again if you have a second rifle add a more powerful scope to that one.

The red dot scope provides rapid target acquisition, but it is difficult to put together a really tight group at ranges beyond 100 meters. at 25-50 meters a magnified scope will likely provide somewhat smaller groups than a red dot (but not that much smaller). It all depends on what the firearm's predominant use will be.
I would also keep the iron sights. Backup sights are always a good idea to have.
