needs to be cleaned and cared for

theres actually a torture test going on an ar15 on another forum with more that 30000 rounds having been fired so far without cleaning it.

I really can't agree with that cons list and think that this is the sort of stuff that perpetuates the spread of misinformation about the platform. I don't mean to sound nasty, but that sort of representation ranks right up there with steel cased ammo leaving melted lacquer in the chamber.

Well, I've found the superthread is a dedicated AR 15 forum, at least three others with great stickies on history, construction, and the various uses. I don't see 50K posts making this easy to use when it gets finished.

Alternate calibers: about three dozen, with 6.8SPC, 6.5G, and 7.62x39 leading the list. Don't forget the .450+ slugs.

Price? STARTING at $599 for a complete CMMG Bargain Bin, check your local gun show, especially in and around MO. Piles and piles of boxed guns ready for sale. Other new guns have sold for less in this market with all discounts and fees applied.

Inventor: Concept, Eugene Stoner. After it sold to Colt, various design teams that invented all the other variations, including the XM, CAR's, A1, A2, and M4. Stoner applied the direct impingement system that had been in use since the 1901 Rossignol B1. He invented the AR10, his assistants downsized the design and created the AR15. Like Kalashnikov, Stoner directed a team and was more involved in overseeing the project than solving every math equation or problem.

Pros: light weight intermediate caliber design that has a high degree of industry compliance. The modular sub components make it extremely easy to break down for cleaning by the soldier, or to change by an owner. Light recoil in most calibers, which allows carrying more ammunition, both of which mean the soldier will fire it more often, creating a higher hit probability than any previous military firearm used by individual soldiers. It's major feature is actually not the DI system, it's the competently placed operator controls that have benchmarked the minimum standard for layout on most military firearms designs since.

Cons: Ignorance and wholesale acceptance of misinformation by a public that no longer participates in military duty. The weapon simply needs to be lubricated, the one maintenance issue the public abhors, because they might get dirty using it. The misperception it needs cleaning is a holdover from the beta fielded versions and military tradition. In the field, it needs lubrication and a quick wipedown. It takes less dedicated cleaning or preservation than it's predecessor made of wood and iron, two materials known for low corrosion resistance. M16's are reported still in use in the Montagnard Highlands, where they continure to function in the hands of tribesmen. Aluminum and composite stocks do quite well after 45 years exposed to the elements on a daily basis, the entire point of why they were adopted. AR's actually need less cleaning, and multiple carbine school instructors have demonstrated it with loaner class rifles.

And, the straight magazine well. Not one of the team's better moments, and certainly not the adoption of "use once and throwaway" magazines. Unfortunately, many service magazines need to be crushed, not stolen or sold for surplus. The highest reliability magazine is the polymer Magpul variety, as it will not deform the feed lips when dropped fully loaded on them, and has an inherently high lubricity for the mag follower. Impacts that would dent and destroy a issue mag will not adversely affect the Pmag. Anyone buying used or surplus magazines knows to cycle them into trustworthy and junk categories. Unfortunately again, the junk mags are sold, once again reinforcing the myth of the AR as a jammomatic. Vietnam era used magazines are still commonly seen for sale at gun shows, and are at least three generations of fielding behind specification, wall hangers all.

More to follow.
