Killed the 23rd hog of the year last night, 115lb sow with the bow. Hit her with a 4 blade 125gr Muzzy on a carbon at 17yds a bit high in the front shoulder. I'd spent all afternoon perfecting the tune on the bow and wanted to see if it made any difference. I didn't get a pass through, but I did manage to bust holes in both shoulder blades. She went 75yds and piled up dead. From what I could tell in the dark gutting her I busted both shoulders and four ribs(two on each side) and came within a 1/2" of getting out the other side. I think with a 3 blade head I would have made an exit because of less drag. Part of the problem was the blade on one side got torn up and bent and sorta made a brake. I didn't have but one spot of blood and it was at the hit site, but it was muddy enough to track her by hoofprints. Not a monster but a nice eating hog.

St. Gunner,

I've got a buddy who's an experienced hunter and archer (used to compete on the state level) and he's a wildlife specialist out in east texas but for some reason it seems that getting hog with bow and arrow has been his "white buffalo" to some extent. For whatever reason hogs have proven elusive when he's hunting them with bow and arrow. It's kinda getting to be a joke though...

The hardest thing is getting a killing shot in on them. They bleed little if you don't get a passthrough. Tell him to try to hit them from in a tree, facing on just in front of the shoulder and angle through out behind the legs. You get a good blood trail and they don't go far. The opposite works also, rip one through the vitals but try to make your exit on the belly side of them.

St. Gunner,

Really I think his problem has not been poor shots but for some reason he just either doesn't get the shots or he doesn't see them when he's archery hunting. He's killed plenty with firearms and he has a lot of success deer hunting but I think he's just had bad luck when it comes to hogs and bows.

"Not a monster but a nice eating hog."

Bragging rights only last so long, but a good piece of wild pig... well that's just tastyness that everyone can enjoy.
Except our Jewish and Muslim friends of course... :)

Very nice shot sir. Good work.
