I have read contrasting arguments. I was just wondering what the forum's thoughts on this were. I load for a 7mm Rem Mag, I am going to buy the large rifle magnum primers (Fed 215), would I be fine with the non-magnum primers? I have read that there was a more consistent result with the magnum primers. Any thoughts would be GREAT. Thanks guys! :)

Depends on the powder you are going to use.

The fact that "magnum" is in the cartridge name/caliber designation means nothing as far as primer useage.

Mr. Shepherd is absolutely correct, but... (Please Don't hit me):) . Most powders will ignite just fine with standard primers. Then there is that one powder that is hard to ignite..."Squib" or worse. Check your manual and go with what is prescribed. Until you have discussed with a bunch of people about a certain powder and their results with standard primers---stay with the manual

RL22 probably. After researching a lot of desired load characteristics, that will probably be the powder. Thanks!

I don't see much difference between mag and non-mag. If there is the possibility of an issue with a round like .44spl (one of my favorites) of the powder bring postion sensitive then I use a mag primer to help burn all of the powder.

LubeckTech...You must not have a Chronograph...They do make a difference with most, but not all, powders. In some cases as much as 50, 100, and 200 fps...If you are dealing with a maximum load it could get you in trouble...If you are dealing with a "hard to ignite" powder...Well..............

tsanford405,

Am presently loading 61.4gr of RL22 in my .30-06, and setting it off with Fed 210M (standard Match) primers. Unless you are using ALOT more powder than that, I would say it is not necessary for you to use magnum primers with RL22.
