On the Animal Planet they have the show called Meerkat Manor. They kind of look like a tall, skinny prairie dog.

It got me thinking if they are the african version of the prairie dog? and if its legal to shoot them in africa?

they are not african prarie dogs but a cousin of the mongoose and I don't think you can hunt them

Very, very different from prairie dogs. They are carnivorous foragers, not grazers like prairie dogs. They also don't form huge colonies.

Maybe not, but that show makes me want a .22-250 anyway. I'd just love to pick off some of those little beggars while they're filming.

I guess I have this thing about anthropomorphizing animals. It's movies like "Bambi" that led to movements like "PETA" from urban airheads that can't distinguish fiction from reality.

Meerkats taste more like Bald Eagle than chicken, with just a hint of Spotted Owl
.

They're not endangered so if you REALLY want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on an African Safari to shoot a highly socialized cousin of the Mongoose...I'm sure you could get your chance.

The cameraman's reaction if one of those buggers asploed while he was filming would be beyond pricless.
