Ariz. visitors with permits can pack heat, Senate says
The Associated Press
March 28, 2003

PHOENIX - The state Senate voted yesterday to allow gun owners visiting Arizona to carry concealed weapons if they have permits from their home states.

Current law doesn't allow such reciprocity unless the other state matches or exceeds Arizona's training requirements for getting a permit. Arizona recognizes permits from just a handful of other states.

A similar reciprocity bill was vetoed in 2001 by then-Gov. Jane Hull, who believed it would undermine the state's concealed weapons program.

Arizona requires a permit-holder to complete 16 hours of training in gun safety and legal issues of using deadly force.
Supporters say law-abiding permit-holders from other states ought to be able to carry guns in Arizona.

The Senate changed the bill (HB2353) to allow reciprocity in cases where police from other states can verify a permit within 24 hours.
It also would require a person who applies for a permit to submit to a criminal background check and complete a firearms safety program.

Mike,

See the last para: "The Senate changed the bill (HB2353)" I would assume the bill would have to go back to the House now that it's been changed or some such procedure to have the same bill out of both houses.

But I know zip about Arizona legislative procedure.
