Arizona becomes more anti-gun!

I have read that with the new AZ no permit CC, instructors will be adversely affected. I think not, the wife and a friend of hers are both going to take the CC course, but not for a permit. They just want to get the proper instruction, legalities, and how to interact with a LEO if they are pulled over for a traffic stop etc.

So wont the people who teach CCW classes be loosing a good amount of business from this?

I think unlicensed carry is fine, but I wonder if the guys who were making money from the licensing process are a bit miffed?
Now there's a situation that's just flat ripp'n my heart out!!

That's good news. The second amendment SHOULD be our concealed carry permit. Hopefully, other states will soon follow suite.

We here, in Illinois, have a lot of work to do, beginning in November.
I think what you need to work on most is your marksmanship!

Well being from AZ and having moved to a state that doesn't allow us to OC I will gladly resume my OC habits upon returning, not sure how comfortable I am with going to no back round checks for CC. But I will have to wait and see, knowing how many persons illegally CC in OK is amazing its about 1 out of 7 from what I have heard and seen.

OP question - No, I dont think the passage of the law will make in more anti-gun here in AZ because of the shock value of people seeing guns instead of not seeing concealed guns. It could but I dont think so. One piece of data we will loose is how many legally conceal here because there will be so many the do legaly conceal with out a permit and no way to track. But I'm willing to loose that data for my freedom.

The only thing that is going to change Arizona's pro-gun attitude is the unfortunate influx of liberals coming from California. The combination of hot weather and large handguns will insure that open carry continues, especially in rural areas.

Agreed. That is the single biggest threat to CC in AZ IMO.
(I was born, raise, and lived most of my life in SoCA. Over the years, a LOT of the "liberals" have turned into the "oppressors". True "liberals" want "liberties".)

Does AZ have gun free zones? Is carry in schools still prohibited?

Yes we do.

Taken from a news station site in Phx.
Gun owners will still need a concealed weapons permit to carry a concealed weapon in a school zone, a national park, a bar and to other states

There are tangible benefits to getting CCW in AZ.

CCW in schools NOT permitted, unless unloaded and locked in the vehicle out of sight. Do not carry on a school with a permit or without, only change in this law is LEOSA covered retired cops may carry on school grounds. There was a bill that altered the law to say permit holders could carry to pick up/drop off children, but it has not emerged so far.
Some will point to the section saying,
C. Subsection A, paragraphs 2, 3, 7, 10, 11, 12, (this is the school grounds one. ed.) and 13 of this section shall not apply to:

1. A peace officer or any person summoned by any peace officer to assist and while actually assisting in the performance of official duties; or

2. A member of the military forces of the United States or of any state of the United States in the performance of official duties; or

3. A warden, deputy warden, community correctional officer, detention officer, special investigator or correctional officer of the state department of corrections or the department of juvenile corrections; or

4. A person specifically licensed, authorized or permitted pursuant to a statute of this state or of the United States.

Don't push it, I don't know of anyone winning on this one. As for bars, that's any establishment serving open alcohol that does NOT have a no guns sign displayed, and the permitee may not drink alcohol. National parks, note quite right eaither, a concealed weapon must have a permit attached, by the federal law, but firearms in AZ located national parks may be carried openly, per fed/state law.

The only thing that bugs me about this is those of us who took the AZ CCW classes got a lot of instruction in the laws attending CCW; those who choose not to get their CCW will be no better off than they were before this law passed, with the exception that now they can't be busted for CCW without a permit. There are plenty of yahoos out there with CCW cards; I think the new law will cause the Yahoo Quotient to spike.

I've carried concealed since '77, permit since '88. When carry came to the "Gunshine State", open carry was also liberalized. No extra violence but the liberals (we have them from all 50 states and elsewhere) absolutely wet themselves. I haven't seen an openly carried gun in public in 20 years. I think open carry tells crooks "shoot me first." JMHO. Joe

^ Yet all facts says the contrary, criminals prefer easy victims, not obvioulsy armed ones

Thats the thing about true freedom and liberty, it can be dangerous but it far outweights the cons of the state disarming people or making it hard for law abiding people to carry gun etc.

Id prefer the 'danger' of freedom, to the 'safety' of slavery

AJumbo - yes, freedom should trump control every time and sometimes it may seem that it's more dangerous. However, in this case, we get more freedom and believe it or not, it's not any LESS safe - probably even more safe.

Vermont and Alaska have been doing this for a long time. If this were a bad idea, the stats would be there. Plus, the yahoos with CCWs that you speak of, well, I'm not seeing the data for that. Certainly if people were misbehaving in AZ, it would be plastered all over the national news. It's not.

Third, I think we will see that firearms instruction courses are going to get better, become higher quality, provide better training and legal instruction and seek to turn more people into recurring customers (always a good thing with training). Just watch the free market work here, and I bet that in 5 years the training scene will have grown substantially. When courses are taught to a government baseline curriculum, there's no incentive to teach anything else.

Just my 0.02 - I can't wait for constitutional carry to sweep the nation. That will be a good day!

BTW, you know all those people with gorgeous tans running around out here? Tourists, every one of them, because us pasty white native Arizonans stay inside, where the AC is! :)

Amen Man! I have been here for over 24 years, born and raised and have only lived in AZ! And i dont know if i have ever had a full body tan, i TRY by tubing the Salt river but... end up looking like a Lobster LOL! Ill just enjoy the Farmer tan and AC and let the Tan "Beach" bodied people try to impress the ladies! LoL

Oh ya and, having this freedom to conceal now... Like many others are saying, its not going to change squat. MAYBE more people will conceal w/o a CCW permit just to "Try it" but I know that many people Carry concealed with no permit already. They have always had the ability too, just now they arnt required to take the class and get a permit. BUT i would still recommend the class to anyone... Getting the permit has many perks that you dont get w/o it.
