Open Carry Day

Xtrader, what better way to get people used to the idea of responsible citizens carrying arms in public, than to let them see responsible citizens carrying arms in public? You don't defend your freedoms by never exercising them.

Some people may get freaked out, but I think many more can see a person with a gun and see nothing bad happens, and come to a more rational conclusion.

BTW, in about 9 years of OC I've never had anyone freak out or call the police.

Though open carry is good and can be a deterrent to crime, I like the idea of concealed carry because it's an element of surprise. I choose to uphold that element. "Out of sight out of mind."

"I think i might. I wish i wasn't the only one in this area though..."

You might be surprised by how many people are already carrying but don't realize others are also. I suspect that an open carry day could be an eye opener for many people.

I don't know. 2 factors for me one is weather and the other is what am I doing that day.

I checked Weather Underground and blue skies are predicted for Michigan on July 4th.
The Tigers are on the road in Seattle.
So now you have no excuses left.Go out and OC.:D

Wow, and I thought open carry was only legal in vermont... I guess I have some stuff to learn. Here in missouri it is strictly illegal, but I suppose I could at least do the lawn day thing. Although, I almost feel safer just concealing, then I don't have to worry about someone trying to take my gun, or it just making me a target. I guess it may discourage some crime, but it may just motivate some too.

If I felt so inclined to OC I would invest in a good double or triple retention holster first.

That's Arizona though. Things are different in that state. I've certainly had my share of confrontations and comments here in VA.

BTW how wise is it to OC on July 4th with all the crowds? They could have picked a better day.

I've open carried for years in Virginia both in "occupied" and in "free" Virginia, (North and South of the Rapahannock) and the only comments I've ever gotten are along the lines of "Can I do that too?" or "What kind of 1911 is that? A Colt?"

I don't have to worry about "open carry day". I open carry most every day.

Thats not entirely correct. Open Carry is legal at state level, but city ordinances may prohibit it.

I've never heard of a single case of anyone lawfully OC'ing that has had their weapons snatched except that one guy who said ti happened to him at 0400 hours in an alley (story still doesn't make any sense). That sort of thing simply doesn't happen. It's just lies and hysteria propagated by the liberals to try and pass more gun control. Don't buy into it!

I usually CC. I OC maybe 3-4 times a month. The point of Open Carry Day/weekend is about getting those who always CC out of the shadows, to stop living in fear behind their over shirts and jackets ;)

Seriously, this doesn't seem to be about making people OC everyday, it's just about getting people to try something they wouldn't normally do and educating the sheeple about the benefits of firearms instead of just the negatives the media always portrays.

I open carry in NW Indiana. Where the chicago shoppers normally out number the local residents on any given day. I've OC'ed within feet of not just the ILL state line but within feet of the chicago city limits! If all teh panuic and freaking out and cop calling was going to happen to anyone, it would have been me. I've never once been hassled by a cop or even asked for a license.

A good source map is located on www.opencarry.org to see what states allow OC and the you'll be interested to find that only 7 (yeah seven) states completely ban OC.

Tho Open carry is legal where i live i will give this a miss . You OC if you choose and i am fine with your choice for you , for myself i will not .

Just because you haven't heard of it happening, doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

I had a neighbor that worked as a PO. He didn't talk about it much, but basically said a guy attacked him in a restroom, trying to take his gun out of it's holster. BG died in the struggle. He also gave a couple other accounts where gun grabs have happened.

So I agree, if you OC it's a GOOD idea to use at least level II retention. Personally I use a SERPA holster with my Sig.

One more thing, lots of people don't seem to have any issue with OC in public. Years and years of bliss. But please don't go telling everyone confrontation/harassment doesn't happen, because it does.

Just a thought, but for those of us that live in Texas or other states where it is not legal for OC what about trying what the students for campus carry try. Just wearing empty holsters to show that good ordinary citizens can carry too. I don't know how well the empty holster stuff worked for them but it's at least a possible alternative. Any thoughts? I'm more for the element of surprise myself.

Everytime OC is brought up, the same people post why they need or think it's better to keep theirs concealed. GREAT! Keep yours concealed! Hide your self defense tool! Don't talk to anyone about gun rights, or participate in any gun related rallies... that's worked so successfully these last 70 years :banghead:

Yes, i'll OC, just like I do 95% of the time. I wont hide my rights, and I wont continue "business as usual".

Who knows, I might actually peak some fence sitter's interest to have a conversation about gun rights? Wouldn't want that would we???

I've done this on occasion, I never get hassled or anything, got one friendly question from an older gentleman about what kind of 1911 it was, just wish I could afford a more fancy set up. A real nice looking leather rig would be nice.

Don't need an excuse to OC, but I'll be doing it on da 4th. And it's true, OC in Arizona is very stress-free and why is that? Because it's legal? Nope, because it's common, and that's just the point! If it's common, people don't freak out. And by the way, we haven't seen our gun rights eroded by the antis just cuz we open carry here. :neener:

I love the guys that are on here like "I'm not doing it cause I don't want to have conversation with all those damn pesky curious folks".

You stooges.... if you're having a conversation... educate them. You might make a believer in the power of our gun rights. Don't be selfish... America already has enough selfishness.
Sorry I didn't put it more eloquently, but I'm not wasting time on this.

Hey look, concealed carry is great, I’m glad we have that option. But your concealed carry weapon is useless for a crime that doesn’t rise to the elevation of potentially deadly.

Gang of street thugs steals your wife’s purse and runs off? Tough nuts for you and her, your ‘element of surprise’ does nothing for you.

Gang of street thugs jump out of the shadows, armed with a gun or knife, before you can react? It looks like the surprise is on you. They get your wallet and your concealed weapon. If you’re lucky, they won’t shoot you with your own gun merely for the irony.

Gang of street thugs surrounds you and taunts you like they do in the movies? OK, just make sure you have something witty to say as you pull your concealed weapon. You win that round. The sad thing is that this tactic is only seen in the movies, not on the streets.

When those same street thugs see your .45 riding confidently on your belt, they have no idea just how nutso you may be, they don’t know you won’t (and can’t) shoot them for a petty crime, and they will go looking for easier pickings.

As for me, I have a lofty goal of going my entire life without ever shooting anyone. I don’t want to surprise a criminal; I want them to avoid me. Personally, I think that many of the people who espouse the ‘element of surprise, are secretly hoping they’ll get to shoot someone. The only surprise they’ll experience will be their own. Criminals aren’t the zombies some are hoping for; they’re smart, street savvy, and cunning. They’re far better at the whole robbery business than any of us. If you don’t believe me, come on out to Tacoma and walk around a while, you’ll get your chance to ‘surprise’ a robber.

I think a nationwide open carry weekend is a fantastic idea.

I don't really feel proud or enthusiastic about the need to be armed 24/7/365.25 in this day and age. This need is merely a testament to the sad state of humanity. If I were to open carry, I'd do it all year, not just on the day someone tells me to.

That is exactly right. And humanity has not changed a whit in the 5000 years of recorded history. Men (and women) have carried weapons in public in all societies throughout all of of history. We may be technologically advanced, but we are just as barbaric as our ancestors - maybe more so with some of the things that we do with that technology.

I'm not knocking OC. I would do it in some certain circumstances if it were legal in Texas. My only problem is having delt with thugs in the past while working graveyard security. What if the thugs target you for the very reason that you are OC and they have found themselves in great need of that $1100 .45 on your side and have decided that your life is worth it. It would be much nicer than their little .22. Thugs kill just to get them a pair of shoes they really want why not a nice gun? But I still plan on wearing my empty holster come national OC day cause I do want to help educate others that it is legal to carry to protect yourself everyday and that's what we all want here.

Well there is a bit more inherent risk to taking a gun than a pair of shoes...

Kinda like the difference between hunting deer and hunting lion.
