I live in California. I will be visiting a college with my son in Arizona. We would like to bring our shotguns for a quail hunt during the trip.

Can I legally have our unloaded shotguns in the trunk of my car on school grounds?

With the new laws, can a California resident CCW in Arizona without a permit (not on campus)?

The law is a bit difficult to decipher. I don't think i would have a loaded gun on school grounds without a permit, even locked in the trunk, but I am not sure about unloaded guns. I can find nothing that says a resident of another state who can legally own a firearm cannot concealed carry without a permit in AZ, as long as he or she doesn't carry on school grounds, certain other restricted areas, some state/federal property, etc. I know that doesn't answer your question very well, but I am tired of looking up AZ laws. There's a lot of info online but it isn't all to be trusted and I didn't find much on unloaded guns in AZ at all.

Here are the laws as I understand them... I am not a legal expert of any kind.

There is a law on the books (look up Arizona Revised Statutes, Criminal Code) that allows the storage of unloaded legal weapons out of sight in a locked vehicle in K-12 parking lots. I've been told by one of the U of A police officers where I work that this now applies to university campuses as well. I have not confirmed that by finding the reference in ARS or Arizona Board of Regents policy. As I understand it, state university campuses are a kind of a grey area, not quite private property, not quite public. As far as I know, guns on campus is a matter of Arizona Board of Regents policy rather than state law. You can call the ASU PD and ask, or even just look on their website, there's likely a FAQ covering this.

On the concealed carry, I have not looked up the new law in ARS either, but I understand it to apply to all legal US residents. Concealed or open carry is however forbidden on the university campuses.

you should contact a circuit court house in the county/counties you plan to visit and ask for a copy of revised statutes/and any other relative law/ordinance pertaining to the posession of weapons by out-of-state residents.

I doubt anyone in arizona will care one way or the other if an UNloaded gun is in the TRUNK of your car. But you can always bring along a lock-able case to put them in just to be sure, on the very unlikely chance you'll be randomly stopped and your vehicle searched.

and make sure you have a license/permit to hunt the specific area you want to hunt.

what jdowney said, call the school and ask them.

Arizona Revised Statutes are available on line, no need to go to a courthouse. Here's the applicable section for constitutional carry:
http://www.azleg.state.az.us/ars/13/03102.htm
The constitutional carry bill removed restrictive language from Subsection A of this section of ARS.

It looks to me as if it did the same to Subsection H, which concerns weapons in locked vehicles. A couple years ago, there was specific language in that subsection that talked about schools, now it seems to be very general. The implication is that possession under Subsection H is legal anywhere in the state that is governed by ARS. Presumably, one's employer could still forbid storage in a vehicle on their private parking lot.

I don't know a thing about carrying, so I won't even attempt to address that part.

As far as the guns in your vehicle go, how big is the campus your son is on? When I had guns in NY, for a couple days I parked off campus and either walked to it if I needed it, or hitched a ride. (I was looking for off-site storage) You could just meet your son off campus and have him drive onto campus. Heck, you could use it as an excuse to do some walking, not an entirely bad thing.

I went through that effort once because it was definitely (according the info I could find) not legal to have a firearm on campus in NY. That, and I have a station wagon, where it would be too easy to have it spotted. I did have one friend that kept a hunting rifle and a .22LR in his trunk when he came on campus. (lived off, and usually bicycled to class) Not saying it was smart, but it worked for him.
