OK, I don't want to debate the issue. Generally I think it's a bad idea.
So is riding a motorcycle without a helmet, smoking cigars, etc.
I do those too, something is gonna get you eventually anyway.

That said, I will be in Carefree, AZ and the surrounding area for 2 weeks over Christmas and I feel the need to OC once or twice SIMPLY BECAUSE I CAN :)

I know it's legal, but what is the reality? Hassles from LE? Business owners?

Tell me the reality of OC in Arizona please, not just what a bad/good idea it is.

I can't speak directly about Carefree, but generally in Arizona open carry doesn't bother anyone - except perhaps visitors from California or back east. Those business that don't want guns will be posted as such, but there aren't many. Remember that you may have a problem with establishments that serve "by the glass."

Also, if you are on a bike, rather then a car or whatever, consider how you will secure the handgun if you do come up against a "no guns" sign.

So far as concealed carry is concerned, do you have a Texas permit? If so it would be recognized in Arizona.

Yeah I have a Texas CHL and I've carried in AZ before, just thought I'd try OC once or twice just to say I have :)

No carry in any place that serves open alcohol, bar OR resteraunt. Any place with ANY sign is a no carry zone, we don't have the specific verbage required like the Texas law. Pick up a current copy of AZ Gun Owners Guide.
I carried open in years in AZ, starting when I was 16. No issues.

Yeah your no alcohol sales things really makes it tough, especially in a resort place like Carefree.

Last time I was there I spent a lot of time taking the gun on and off and locking it in the car.

I've lived here all my life (not quite 30 years), have seen quite a bit of open carry, and have open carried myself quite a bit since I turned 21. I've only heard about a small handful of negative incidents in AZ resulting from lawful open carry.

It is truly a non-issue for most people around here.

Be careful in Scottsdale and in Carefree that you don't stray onto the Indian reservation with a firearm otherwise you, the gun and your bike will likely be impounded and even if they release you that does not mean you will get the bike or gun back for a long time.

Anything East of Scottsdale road North of Scottsdale proper is Indian land. You can loook it up on a good map for more exact coordinates.

Open carry in general is no big deal unless you are trying to look like a big bad biker, which may get you hassled in some places.

I seem to remember carry being forbidden in places where more than half of total income comes from alcohol sales, rather than *anywhere* alcohol is served. I'll try to remember to check in the AZ Gun Owner's Guide when I get home tonight, and post tomorrow for certain.

As I recall, you may not, whether carrying openly or concealed, unless a cop, or it's an emergency, enter a bar or restaurant that is licensed to serve alcohol. Percentage of sales doesn't enter into it as far as my poor memory recalls. My copy of the AZ Gun Laws Book is AWOL and I can't find the cite in the ARS, so it'll be good to read what you find when you look it up.

I've known store owners to open carry in AZ. My grandparents live there so i visit from time to time and i have seen store clerks open carry.

Open Carry

As to the Rez if you don't stop or get off your bike or off the road your fine.

Carefree, never had any trouble OC.

Bars or Resturaunts that serve alcohol are off limits while packing.

% of sales is a non issue.

Any place posted is off limits.

On this one most places that do so post in such a discreet out of the way place that I had carried both OC and CC for two years into my local Ahwatukee theater before someone pointed it out. Man I miss the movies...

If you get a moment go check out Ben Averys Shooting Range they remodeled it and its pretty nice!

Enjoy Az it's a great state!

As with pretty much everything else in life, good judgement and a knowledge of the local laws combined with a subtle and discrete approach towards civilian open carry in AZ goes a lot further with most folks and LEO's than the overt and oft-times alienating "tactical" or "S.W.A.T." look.

I'm of the opinion that the more inocuous and vanilla the open carry is, the less noticeable it becomes and those folks who simply are unfamiliar with open carry or uncomfortable with it tend to react less. It's actually a win-win, even though we all may wish open carry would be regarded in a more positive light by all.

Don't Confuse Arizona with Texas

I seem to remember carry being forbidden in places where more than half of total income comes from alcohol sales, rather than *anywhere* alcohol is served. I'll try to remember to check in the AZ Gun Owner's Guide when I get home tonight, and post tomorrow for certain.
While a 51% rule would be a step forward for Arizona, it is not current law.

While Arizona cops do not have the time to go around patting people down in restaurants that serve alcohol, carrying openly into such an establishment would be asking for trouble.

As to reservation carry, I was able to survey 20 of Arizona's 21 reservations about recognition of the CWP, back in 2005. The results of that survey are toward the end of the Arizona page I assembled for USAcarry.com. Please note my comment that open carry on a reservation is likely to be seen as provocative.
