Living in the small north central town of Heber Springs, Arkansas has it's problems when it comes to reloading. We have one shop here that carries primers of all shapes and sizes and Alliant, IMR and a few Hodgdon powders but yet no bullets. It took me a while but I found a place in Searcy Arkansas called Blue Star Cartridge & Brass where I get my bullets and brass which he has tons of both but he carries very little powder at all. I know of a couple of places in Little Rock that carries reloading supplies, Fort Thompsons and Don's Weaponry. While they had a decent selection of things, they had no Winchester or VV powder. I have driven all over the state and gone to many gunshows from Little Rock all the way up to Fort Smith even as far south as Hot Springs stopping at every gunshop I can find along the way, but I have yet to every see a jug of Winchester 231. Do any of the THR Arkansas members know of any places that reliabily carries winchester powders? Everywhere I ask they either do not carry it or won't bother getting me some for fear of getting stuck with it, which suprises my since it is seems to be so popular. I been reloading since December of last year and I have yet to try WW231 or any of the VV powders for lack of being able to find any for sale. Any infomation would be appreciated.

Hodgdon HP38 is the same powder as W231. Good luck finding VV powder, if you find it and like it, buy as much as you can.

I live in Mountain View. We might get together and go in for a bulk buy from somewhere like Graff in Missouri, if you like. In a bulk buy, you aren't restricted to one type of powder, so we can get whatever we need.

I am not against that at all Vern. In fact one of my favorite places to shoot is just a few miles outside Mountain View, the sylamore shooting range. I don't think that's spelled right but I am sure you know where I am talking about. I know it's a bit far just to go just to punch some holes but I enjoy the drive as much as the time spent shooting. I enjoy the peace and quite I get there. I am all for getting together on some bulk buys since I go that way to shoot.

So how do you come -- Arkansas 25 to 92 to 263 and then to 9? If you do, you come right past my place. I live a half mile south of Stone County Road 16, between Sunnyland and Fox.

Give me a holler someday when you're going to Sylamore and I'll either meet you here, or at the range. We'll talk about ordering some powder and stuff. We might even do a little shooting on my place -- I have 185 acres.

I take Hwy 25 to Wolf Bayou then Hwy 5 straight up through Mountain View. I may be that way this weekend. The other half is demanding I take her shooting soon. I'll let you know later in the week if it is for sure but yes that sounds like a plan to me.

redloki, mailorder is your friend! Check out places like Powder Valley for powder and primers. Just buy in large qtys.

Dave, This idea was a last ditch effort in finding some place fairly near by that has it on hand. I have no problem ordering anything else online and do quite often. I have just put off ordering powders and primers online to keep from having a hazmat fee tacked on. Even ordering in bulk your still going to pay more per pound that just picking it up at a store that stocks it. I just kept hopeing that in my travels around the state I would find a store that stocked it and could pick some up when I was that direction to save a little money. By posting this someone might give me a heads up as to where to find the powders I wished to try.

PCF, My uncle swears by HP-38. I have yet to try that one but it is on my list. After your post I got to looking at the load data for both and they do in fact appear to be identical. Thanks for the info.

I'm free on Saturday, and Sunday after church. Give me an email or a call.

There is a gun shop/jewelry shop in Little Rock at the corner of Rodney Parham & Mrkham. They carry some reloading gear & I seem to recall seeing WInchester powder.

Here it is:
Southern Trading & Loan
Address: 8316 W Markham St, Little Rock, AR 72205
Phone: (501) 223-2303

redloki.....I get all my powders from John's Guns in Fort Smith.

Next time you are in Fort Smith, go to John's.

He is on Greenwood, just north of Rogers, across from the venerable Sally Ann convenience store.

The Sally Ann is a Fort Smith institution, and impossible to miss.

Look for John's sign.

I have bought about 5lbs of Win 231 in the past year and half.

I live in Russellville and get most of my stuff from Arkansas Guns and Ammo located across the river in Dardanelle. He carries lots of powder.

Next time you are driving down I40 check it out. A few doors down is Old Bank gun and Pawn. He had the best selelction of bullets around.

For bulk buying, I'll usuaully go to the various gun shows in Little Rock. There I'll get powder and primers and bullets, just to save on the shipping costs.

arkansas conspiracy

powder shortage !

i am blaming the Clinton's

this was just drill - i case a Clinton did get elected, please reload lots more ammo.

thank you

:)

Well gents, I finally found me some W231. I was on a roadtrip friday to Little Rock and stopped in one of the stores mentioned above ( Sourthren trading and loan)and got it. I stopped at another place that I had visited before, Fort Thompson, And they were fully stocked with it. 1,4,8 lb jugs. They had the whole family. They are really good on having just about every kind of powder but but some of the popular ones sell so much he said he has a hard time keeping it in stock sometimes. I just got 2lbs of it and if I like it as much as some of you then I will get me a big jug next time. You don't have to let this post kill the thread. Keep the ideas coming. For those of us that do live in Arkansas it may be a good reference tool if your going to a city you have never been too and looking for something you may need and not be able to find.
Vern, I am still looking forward to meeting you and doing some shooting and still perhaps a little bulk ordering in the near future. I will be up there at sylmore this morning but I know you go to church on Sundays so next time I head that way I will make a point of doing it on Saturday and letting you know in advance so we can meet up. Thanks guys for all your help.

I'm on my way to church right now -- just got to turn the horses and donkeys out after feeding them.

We'll get together one of these weeks -- we're having a barbecue for the Republican candidates next Saturday.

When I was in high school :)eek: Deer 76-80) we used to go to Red's guns out by the wal-mart in Clarksville :D . he used to give a pretty good deal and had everything we ever need for our weapons.... even repaired my old mans browning. Give him a try if he's still there its on 21 on the way to I40 I believe  . Take care and take the Clintons back :what: :neener: .... PLEASE :banghead:
