To begin with, I apologize. I use to keep up with the state of art for sniping but ever since The Tactical Rifle magazine de-volved (sorry for the made up Inglese) into The Accurate Rifle (boring) and I've been studying the blackpowder sharpshooter more, I've fallen behind.

So I get this Rem 700 M-24 by Armament Technology the other day and noticed that it has a detachable magazine. Rather surprising as I've known that Remington & HS Precision (and perhaps a few others) to have made them but I've never seen one before. Furthermore, I never took the detachable magazine design seriously as I figured a bolt gun's virtue is the rigidity of the receiver and the less cut away the better (more metal needs to be removed to fit a magazine). Anyway, how do I tell what the make of the trigger guard and magazine is? I'd like to pick up a spare magazine or two.

Other features that the rifle has includes a 24" Obermeyer 5R barrel. The 5R was adapted from the Russians and suppose to cause the least deformity of the bullet and yields the greatest accuracy. Remington copied it for their military line of M-24s and sells that same barrel to Knight Armament for their SR-25. One thing I haven't figured out about the barrel is that about a 1/2" back from the muzzle is a groove that is cut all around the barrel. No one here seems to know what the purpose of this groove is. Slip rubber bands on so you can attach your kitchen knife as a bayonet? :p

It also has an enlarged bolt handle knob for easy operation. Optics is Bausch & Lomb 40 mm mil-dot scope and the rings appear to be Badger Ordnance (outwardly they appear to be the same pattern as Leupold Mark IVs but the machining is superior).

Stock is a McMillan sniper stock that is adjustable for length of pull. It also features a short legged Harris bipod.

The gun was shipped in a heavy duty olive drab guncase. It's neither like the Dockosil I had or the Pelican. It's not a modern Pelican as those have wheels on it (unlike my older Pelican). A Dewey cleaning rod was included as well as a yellow empty gun flag to insert into the chamber. A zipper "ballistic" (and I use this term loosely) nylon case for the gun's log book was included too.

The price? Well, I won it in a raffle. Thank you Sniper Country! http://www.snipercountry.com!Sniper Country

I contacted Scott Powers of Sniper Country

and he identified the detachable magazine system as made by HS Precision. Whew! If it was Remington, I'd junk the magazine system and replace it with something reliable.

That mysterious groove around the exterior of the barrel is for the attaching of a muzzle brake (someone else suggested it was for a Sako muzzle brake). Why anyone would install a muzzle brake on a tactical rifle escapes me, but hey, it's there and as Scott points out, it's a nice indexing groove for the, ahem, balloon.
