I've been wanting to try some different ammo in my .22 rifle. I know there are two places here in Portland that can help me but one of them is the Sportsman's Whorehouse and I won't even go in there to get out of the rain! So I walk into the Gun Room and ask for some Wolf target ammo.
The jerk behind the beard told me that they don't carry any of the "crap." His attuitude seemed to indicate that he thought I was some sort of parasite that had come in on the bottom of a real customer's shoe. When I mentioned that the ammo had been getting pretty good reviews he turned away with a comment about "literary prostitutes" who will write anything to get paid.
I know, I know... I'm just not as bright as I should be. I guess I need to have someone insult me once in awhile. It also helps when the insultor's attitude is overbearing, imperious and just generally bad.
Someone remind me from time to time that I should never again go into that place. My blood-pressure can't handle it. :banghead:

That's funny, because a lot of really good competitive target shooters use Wolf.

Heck, a few years ago when I was in college, we visited OSU, and their entire collegiate shooting program used Wolf pretty much exclusively.

If you have a C&R,

Wolf Target : $25/brick, $242/case
Wolf Match : $36/brck, $349/case

Regular price,

Wolf Target : $28/brick, $260/case
Wolf Match : $40/brck, $380/case

At Midway USA.

What I wanted to do is try several different types of ammo. I'm sure almost any of them will be an improvement over the generic CCI MiniMax stuff I've been shooting but I'm interested in finding out which is best in my rifles. I don't think I need to buy a brick of each of them to see what kind of difference they make, a couple of boxes should be enough. I guess I'll just order some from Natchez. They've always treated me pretty good.

If the gun room carries CCI, they have no room to talk bad about Wolf. That stuff is not the best shooting stuff (in my gun), but it does shoot ok. It is certainly far from the crap that he painted it as.

"literary prostitutes" who will write anything to get paid

Maybe you should have told him you would prefer that over some "literary virgin" who shouldn't get paid . :D

Oldfart, what bad experience have you had with Sportsman's
Wharehouse? There is one by where I live with a pretty good staff and
great prices. Is there somthing at a corporate level?

Workingman-- The problems I've had with Sportsman's Whorehouse seem to be caused by ignorant clerks trying to abide by corporate policy.
I bought a set of Burris rings there that were supposed to have graduated inserts which would allow me to get more vertical correction. The staff there assured me that the included rings were all I'd need.... Wrongo! I ended up ordering the tapered rings from Graff & Sons.
I tried to buy a pound of powder from them but was held up at the checkstand for 20 minutes while the clerk got a price verification on an item for a customer ahead of me.
On several occasions I asked for a product and was told they didn't carry it because "no one ever wanted it." It's one thing to be treated like a "no one" and another to be told you are one.
Maybe I'm just a bit thin-skinned but when I go into a store looking for a product, I really would prefer the clerks to admit they have no idea what I'm talking about rather than try to tell me what I 'really' want.

His attitude probably is directed toward Wolf Centerfire ammo, and he just heard someone else mention it,so he jumped blindly on their bandwagon without really listening.Older Wolf CF was lacquer coated, and combined with the reputation of steel cases that destroy! guns( ) would muck up your guns chamber if you didn't clean it thoroughly and regularly.Newer Wolf is polymer coated and doesn't leave melted lacquer in your chamber. He probably knows very little about firearms and ammo except what he's heard other people say....Kinda like expecting the clerk at Radio Shack to actually know something about radio... :banghead:

I recommend Aquila over Wolf. I was impressed with wolf and was using it in my rifles until I tried some aquila rifle and pistol match and was even more impressed and its about 2/3 the price of wolf. Not saying wolf is bad (except ing my S&W 22A), but the aquila performed better.

For about that much money, I would suggest some SK Standard Plus or Lapua Super Club. SK will run you 250 a case, Lapua will run you 350 or so, and I've found them to shoot better than the more expensive Wolf ammo.*

*your results may vary. :p (remember that each gun has her own likes and dislikes)

Oldfart, I completely understand about the service (or lack thereof) at the Sportsman's Wharehouse on 82nd Ave.

I went in there with my 3 year old son, trying to buy him a bb-gun. They wouldn't let me open any of the boxes to look at the rifles, to see which one fit my son the best. I eventually talked them into cutting down the display model that was held up with zip ties, just so I could let my son hold it, but all I got was attitude the entire time. :cuss:

You think someone in that industry would be thrilled to help a future member of the gun culture, not to mention a future customer...

As for waiting in line, I can understand that, too. It seems they are always understaffed, and there's always a problem ringing up my merchandise. In fact, I could've even been the guy holding up the line that day.

I was trying to buy some bullets, reloading manuals, and reloading accessories, and almost all of the prices rang up wrong. When I told the clerk, they tried to ring them up again, then called back to the firearms counter to have them check the prices, too.

After they called back with the same prices I had told the clerk, the clerk had to go back to physically look at the price tags on the shelves! :banghead: Meanwhile, there is a line forming, and only one other clerk at the time. :fire:

Combine these experiences with the fact that they always seem to be out of stock on everything I go there to purchase, I'm not too likely to spend any more money there, either.

They do have a nice selection of firearms to browse, but I get better service with my local gun dealers. I also find better deals on reloading supplies at Bi-Mart. So, I can't really see any reason to go back. Just my opinion.

Apparently not all Sportsman's Warehouse stores are the same. The one near me (Phoenix, AZ) has plenty of friendly help and many decently priced bang sticks that they're happy to let me fondle. And they support open carry.

Another reason I dislike Spoprtsman's Warehouse is they seem to be the WalMart of the spsorting goods stores.
We used to have a number of smaller stores around, some sold guns, some didn't. But when the big store moved in with the low prices, the little guys all went out of business. Now that the competition is gone, I suppose the prices have risen too. I wouldn't know for sure, since I don't go in there.

the &#$&^$ Gun Room :fire:

I hate that friggin place... I cannot even begin to imagine how many new shooters those guys have ruined.

the typical, "If I dont have it in stock, its a pile of S%^T"

They are 1 of three local shops that made me so absolutely sick... That I went and started my own gun business... So now I have my FFL and my 10 year plan is to see these guys (and the others on my list) go out of business...

DOWN WITH THE GUN ROOM

<-- Another guy who refuses to shop at the Gun Room. They suck. Try Keith's in Gresham, or NW Armory in Milwaukie. Possibly even The Gun Broker on 82nd Dr.

THR mission possibility: Pick a single day for Highroaders to randomly go to the Gun Room and ask about things that we know will piss off the guy. Wolf ammo, Mini-14's (my last experience), black rifles, Glocks, or anything else he will have problems with. I figure he'll be pulling his hair out by closing time.

You might mention to him that Wolf has no part in the manufacture of the .22 ammo, it is rebranded German ammo that is quite well reputed and used by people who can afford to spend a *lot* more.

When I mentioned that the ammo had been getting pretty good reviews he turned away with a comment about "literary prostitutes" who will write anything to get paid.

Now, this guy was talking nonesense with regards to the .22lr wolf ammo, however if you have ever read a gun rag, this is actually a pretty apt description of much of what you will find between those glossy covers.

The only problem with Wolf ammo is when I run out!

I use Wolf with the polymer cases, and I used to use the lacquered cases, and not once did I even have a problem (although once the lacquer did get hot and kind of smoke in my AK) and I continue to use it to this day to the distain of those who believe the only ammo ever worth shooting is Federal (don;t get me wrong, Federal is nice ammo, but it's pretty damned expensive).

Most people have unrealistic expectations about firearms: "if I buy the most expensive gun, and the most expensive ammo, I will then have the most accurate and BEST gun". We all know this is Taurus Feces, Viva Wolf.

Viva Wolf

Viva!

The Gun Room???

What a waste of a perfectly good gun store! The only reason he gets any business is because anytime the local news critters want to offer a "balanced" counterpoint to their usual antigun rant, they go to that guy. His selling philosophy is "If I don't sell it, it's crap!"

I went inthere looking to buy a Ruger MKII .22lr pistol, and he acts like I peed on the Pope! Then tries to get me to buy a USED High Standard for $1200. When I point out to him that I could buy a new, currently manufactured HS for that price, he snorts and tells me, "They're not as good as that one!" I ask if he's seen a new one, "NO, I don't need to see it to know it's not as good as that one!" I just shook my head and walked out.

This guy in the "gun room", he wouldn't have another store in Tacoma, Wa. called "gun and bow", would he- sounds like exactly the same attitude.
