I was at my local Walmart yesterday, and am new to the AR scene. They had a Remington $800, and a Sig for $899. The Remington had a multi position stock and the sig had the solid type stock. I did not get them out to compare the types of sights but will before I make a purchase! But I was wondering if one was superior to the other as far as operating system. I really font know the difference of gas Vs. piston or anything else. I'v heard that Remington's gone down in quality and Sig is highly regarded by law enforcement. Any help would be appreciated.

Remington AR

The Rem. is made by DPMS. Mine has a pic. rail and no sights, and a fixed stock. It's a mod. 25 (308) and shoots a ragged hole with factory ammo. Haven't had any experience with the Sig. Good luck with your choice.

The sig may not be a piston gun they make direct gas ar15's too. Your best be would be a CMMG/colt or other mid-range AR. A few hundred more would buy you a much much better gun. I mean it's Walmart. You can do much better for $900. If you want a cleaner running easier to clean gun and have the money check out Primary Weapons Systems. They make a great ar! Also do note that Sig is "NOT" what they used to be. They have had tons of problems in the past few years. Especially with their 556 rifles. Don't know how good their ar15s are currently.
With ARs just make sure it's mill-spec and has a nitride treated or Chrome lined barrel. That last part is very important. For a beginner I'd say just buy a compete lower and then a BCM bolt/upper. You instantly save 10% in federal tax over buying a complete gun. Also note that mid-length gas systems are the way to go with 16' barrels. If you are not running a piston system. Good luck. I'm sure others will chime in to help!

First, the piston system does one thing significantly better than the DI system - it makes your wallet lighter.

The Sig at wal-mart is a DI gun with no sights, just a picitanny rail and low pro gasblock. It's a heavy barrel (looks chrome lined), non-free float with a fixed stock and 10rd mag. It would make a great varment or predator rifle. I do not recommend this rifle as a first AR b/c most people end up wanting a lighter weight carbine.

The "Remington" is probably a Bushmaster M4gery. I do recommend it as a first AR: chrome bore for easy cleaning, M4 profile barrel saves weight (I'd prefer a light weight barrel, but whatever), has a fix FSB and removable carry handle (basically you can shoot it as is and add optics later). Bushmaster isn't the flavor of the month so you probably will have 100 other recommendations on other ARs not available to you right now and/or priced well above $1000; then probably 3-5 people will out right bash them with no first hand experience; then maybe 1-2 people with a legit problem that had to be fixed under warranty.

If it is a Remington R15 (camo) I'd say pass b/c the barrels and bolt carrier are not chrome lined (at least they used to not be). I mean the barrel is ok not lined; it's not much harder to clean, most people will never wear out a non-lined barrel, reliabilty will be there if kept moderately clean; but the non-lined bolt carrier group is a no-go for me b/c I can see that being a big reliablity issue after a high round count and the carbon is hard enough to get out of there in a chromed carrier.

ETA: I recommend buying vs building for a newbie. Buy it, strip it, clean it and use it. After you see how everything works, then you can build what you want from there on. You really don't save much anymore building vs buying on a basic AR anyway now a days. My 10.5 SBR will be in the mid $700 range before tax stamp, and that was using spare parts and looking for deals; my 20" A4 ran the same doing the same. I won't even get into this retro faze I'm in b/c both A1 will run ~$1000 a piece built. Also you may not be familar with the transfer process or FFLs that will transfer in your area yet to purchase lowers by themselves.

I bought a Remington R15- put a Jewell trigger in it and I love it. Shoot less than 1/2" at 100. Light weight. Nothing bad so for. Trigger was hard and rough,I like light and smooth. JP

FYI I don't think the Remington has a chrome lined barrel. It is a re-branded DPMS, and they don't make any rifles with CL.

The R-25 (Remington 308 AR) was DPMS; the R-15 was Bushmaster, not sure about now.

The current Remington catalog shows lots of ARs in camo, no black rifles, no collapsible stocks. But its Walmart, they may be able to get a custom SKU.

You might look at the barrel twists and make sure it matches up with the ammo you want to shoot.

+1 on buy complete first, build later. You get to shoot right away and learn about the rifle at the same time. Buy what you like, both are guns, both will go bang.

I am hearing more and more about Walmarts having AR's in stock, I wish my local wally world would get some in, I at least want to git a look at'em

I'd go with sig but not a walmart one. I'd buy the 551 or 556. I love sigs own 3 and all 3 rock. No personal Remmington experience but sounds like its not even really a Remmington.

Thanks for the info, after some research I've decided on a Stag Arms model 8, not really that much more expensive and comes with the flip up sights I'm wanting!

One thing to remember about a piston over a di set up is most parts are some what proprietary. So no just ordering a new bcg or new quadrails you have to make sure it's will all work together. I'd look at a stag model 2. That way everything is universal ar parts.

Well, i'll be the first to recomend something else. If advising somebody to get a better product for the money is bad then call me evil. Colts are going for under a grand right now and as long as you have a FFL in the area willing to do transfers they are available to you, assuming no laws against. For me buying a thousand dollar rifle online is generally cheaper if found out of state as no sales tax generally offsets the shipping and transfer fee. If you're dead set on those two find out which does HPT/MPI testing of all bolts and barrels and then make sure the gas key is properly staked. I would suspect sig to be much closer to mil spec but who knows?
