Do not go and just start taking things off to lighten it up. If you take anything off of the gun that is not original you will render the thing non-C&R. Then you will have an illegal rifle in that it will not be section 922 compliant unless you get the specific foreign parts count down to 10 or less.

Not being C&R doesn't mean it has to be 922(r). 922(r) only applies if parts are ADDED that make it a "non-sporting" rifle, like extended/detachable mags that hold >10rds, pistol grips, flash hiders/threads, or folding/telescoping stocks.

Not so. If you remove any parts and render the gun non-C&R it is illegal as the SKS is illegal to import as it is a non-sporting arm. Then it must comply with 922.

This is why you cannot buy new Norinco SKS rifles now. They are import banned. The SKS is not a sporting rifle. It is a military rifle. Thus banned unless C&R or 922(r) compliant.

No, actually. C&R and 922(r) are almost entirely unrelated. Once again, 922(r) only applies to imported rifles and shotguns that have listed features. If the gun is feature-free, even if it's not C&R, it's unaffected by 922(r). An example of this is an unconverted Saiga shotgun or rifle. Sporting and non-sporting are determined by feature count, not intended original use of the design. A military rifle could be a "sporting rifle" in the eyes of ATF.

Any firearm manufactured in China is banned from import to the U.S., and it's been like that for a while. Has nothing to do with sporting or non-sporting, or C&R. If China made a bolt-action single-shot, it still wouldn't be allowed in the U.S.
