I may be duplicating another thread, but my questions are different enough that I thought they warranted another thread...

Is there a way to remove a Yugo SKS grenade sight & launcher WITHOUT disabling the gas cutoff? I want to be able to cut off the semi-auto function & use it as a single-shot when needed.

Also, has anyone chrono'ed the velocity difference b/t 7.62x39 ammo when fired in a Yugo SKS w/ the gas cutoff enabled vs. regular semi-auto function? Is there much difference?

Many thanks in advance....:D

EDIT: One more question:

Has anyone tried the SKS kit that ATI makes (the one w/ the scope, clips, manual, & other goodies)? How well does the scope work? (I'm not looking for sharpshooter-grade optics, but my eyes could use a little help in the sighting department.) Does the kit work w/ the Yugos?

Again, many thanks...:D :D

1. Removing the launcher wouldn't affect the valve at all.

2. You should be able to remove the sight without affecting the valve. It might require a steady hand and a drill though.

3. I chrono'ed the way you asked about. Results:

In all but 1 kind of commie ammo tried, the shot-to-shot variance was running over 100fps, so I couldn't tell the speed difference in relation to valve posistion.
I found 1 kind that runs very well(and hot to boot) it averages about 2450 with a 124gr hp, and the variance between shots is about 20f.p.s. On average I would say an average gain of about 10-20 f.p.s. with the valve shut.

On your last question I have no idea.

Visit this website:

Scroll down the links on the left side, and select the SKS Carbine link. Once you get to the SKS pages, look in the list on the right side for a section about removing the grenade sight on the Yugo SKS

So what was the consensus on the legality of doing this? I thought someone said that once you altered the rifle, it loses it's C&R status and since the Yugo isn't a legal gun without it's C&R status then that means you would become a criminal.

If he alters it, it's C&R status is invalidated.

So he has to continue altering it until it meets the importability criteria of a non-C&R SKS, much like the configuration of post-'89 Chinese SKS rifles. Otherwise, he's got a rifle that's illegal to import - and illegal to own. There was an exception made for the residents of the PRK, an agreement was worked out with their Department of Justice where the evil grenade launcher was either removed, replaced with a muzzle brake or modified so it couldn't be used to launch grenades any more.
