ASP baton in Texas, not concealed but in residence/place of work?

While I have a Texas CHL, it is no-go for me to carry a firearm, especially since I have business casual dress code and have to go in and out of state and federal courthouses all day long. I don't do Kel-Tecs, LCPs, never saw or handled one that I considered reliable, Airweight snubs are better but regardless there is no way for me to safely and securely retain a gun while I am out going to said courthouses.

I work a job in which I routinely deal with belligerent people. So far I have not been attacked, but that could change tomorrow for all I know.

I have a folding knife, and need to get some pepper spray, but I was wondering about the legality of keeping an ASP baton in your residence or place of work in Texas. I know carrying one out in public is no-go (still don't understand the reasoning behind that one), but I would like to have one in my office as a self-defense option. No rules in the company handbook about that as far as I can tell. I am able to do that and use one in a self-defense situation?

You can have the ASP in your residence.

You can carry the ASP (concealed) in your vehicle, provided you don't fall awry of the statute (it's the same statute that covers concealed handguns and traveling non-CHL folk)

Carry the ASP at work? That's a whole 'nother story.


Get the pepper spray. It's legal darn near anywhere.

Why would you in the first place? A collapsable baton is a compromise. You trade effectiveness for portability. Portability isn't an issue in your place of business or home.

Get a good stock cane and carry it.

+1 on the cane. Invisible to almost everyone and ever handy. I considered this option (collapsible baton) for a while, myself; I even went so far as getting one to practice with before finding the wisdom of this forum. Read the cane thread.

"Place of work" needs further explanation. If you own the business, it is like your home. If you are the person in charge of the premises, is it like your residence. If you are an employee, well, find something else, that is legal in public.

When I asked about the legality of these ASP batons in my CHL class, the instructor grinned and said (half laughing) "Boy, you're gonna be carrying a gun, why bother with those things?
