(re: the best analogy to the crossbow's "disrupting the entire order")

Barrett .50 cal?

Now *that* is an excellent point. I am glad someone posted a picture of the Barrett (we should rename this thread "scary or cool-looking long arms").

I have only fired 10 rounds through that beast for familiarization purposes. What a monster. If I had more disposable cash I would probably have one just to explore all the intricacies of really shooting at such long distances.

I suppose it's ability to disrupt "the order" would have more to do with hitting hardened personnel targets rather than it's nominal anti-material purpose. Very interesting that someone from NZ would bring this up. I thought the climate was very anti-firearm there.

Best,
David

Well, according to the VPC (http://www.vpc.org/studies/awaap2.htm):
"Assault firearms are semi-automatic (firing one bullet per trigger pull) and fully automatic (the weapon will keep on firing as long as the trigger is depressed) anti-personnel rifles, shotguns, and handguns that are designed primarily for military and law enforcement use."

Of course, the problem with this definition is that pretty much any gun out there was originally designed for military or LE use, or is based on a gun that was. Bolt action hunting rifles, for example, were originally designed for the military, lever action repeating rifles were too. Heck, swords were originally designed for the military, knives probably were too.

Also from the VPC (http://www.vpc.org/studies/awaconc.htm):
"The weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weaponsanything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine guncan only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons. In addition, few people can envision a practical use for these weapons."

They still have that little tidbit on their website. Their series of webpages on "assault weapons" reads more like talking points for The Brady Campaign and other gun ban groups then something that's meant to persuade the general public.

Dang, makes me want to run out and buy an AK or put a MK14 Mod 0 stock on my M1A.

That stock actually came on it. It's the 556 SWAT Patrol rifle (http://www.sigsauer.com/Products/ShowCatalogProductDetails.aspx?categoryid=35&productid=276). It's cool that it folds and all but it only has two positions: in and out. It came with a 2nd buttplate that extends the length of the stock, thank God. With the extended buttplate it's ok for my average 5 ft 8 in height. My 6 foot tall father in law found it to be a little short for him.

If you're thinking about buying one, I should warn you that it dings the brass up. It also ejects the brass rather far away, and at weird angles. Some of the brass goes straight sideways, some goes forward and right at a roughly 45 degree angle, some goes God only knows where. The accuracy has been what you'd expect. I found it can be picky with STANAG mags, not all the ones I had laying around that I know work in a Colt M4 worked in the Sig. I tested the ones I had to find 4 that worked reliably, plus it's factory mag and the one P-Mag I've bought so far.

Honestly, so far, I'd only recommend it if you don't want an AR (I didn't) and you don't want to wait for the price to drop on the SCAR. People are always knocking the AR on reliability, but I've personally put 1800 rounds through a Colt M4 in one day (and 1200 rounds the day prior). Between the two days I just did a quick wipedown and oiled the bolt carrier. I had exactly 1 malfunction in those 3000 rounds, and that was a faulty mag's fault. Of course, I wasn't getting foreign matter in the gun, just gunpowder residue, but how many people going to the local gun store to pick up a 5.56mm rifle are going to be dragging it through the mud. (I did spend 3 to 4 hours the next day scrubbing the bolt, bolt carrier, chamber, etc. with a dental pick though.)

Thing is though, I didn't want to buy an AR and I didn't want a bullpup design, nor did I want to spend $3000 on the SCAR they had. I've had zero complaints with my Sig 1911 so I figured, hey, for the $1500 it's selling for now go with the Sig 556. I am being kinda harsh though, it's had no trouble with the 6 mags I'm using now and it tears down easy for cleaning. I couldn't tell you how clean it runs yet, I've only fired about 80 rounds so far. I would do a 3000 round test of the Sig, but I can't afford that much ammo right now.

I am really glad I didn't buy the Sig 6 months ago when they were selling it for $2200! :D

ive allready got the 556, just didnt know that they had come up with a new design... i think ill stick with my current buttstock, i dont like the looks, but i love the length of pull
