I read this in Issue # 3-20 Brief of "The Federalist" re: Assault Weapons. [from selected reader comments, so other than "The Federalist", I do not know the source] To see the entire issue, and to subscribe, etc. visit the website:

“’Assault weapons’: An assault weapon by Department of Defense definition has to have selective fire capability; that is, a machine-gun. A semi-automatic requires a separate squeeze of the trigger for each shot. The law that the gun banners wrote defines an assault weapon as having two of the following features: a pistol grip, bayonet lug, folding stock or flash suppressor. So if you tapped a knife to a broom handle and attached a pistol grip you would have an assault weapon.â€

Gee, anti-gun halfwits not able to tell the difference between a true assault rifle and a semi-full-bolt-action high-capacity-too-accurate-meant-to-spray-bullets-randomly rifle?

The horror.:scrutiny:

Yep, a true assault weapon is a select fire weapon. IIRC, the term "assault weapon" was actually coined by Hitler in WWII to describe the intermediate caliber full auto weapons the Germans developed and the Americans and Russians copied.
