Assessment of Trade Value: PLease help!

I have a Springfield 1888 Trapdoor 45-70 ramrod bayonet rifle, it is in very nice condition except for a 2 inch long scratch on the left side of the butt stock. I have never shot it, and it has always hung on my wall.

My uncle's friend has a Harrington and Richardson M1 Garand. Assuming that it is also in equally good cosmetic and mechanical condition, would a straight out trade be fair monetarily? Or would I be better off selling the Trapdoor for cash, and buying an M1 Garand?

It seems like a good trade, however, I would ask about the Serial # on the Garand, then find out what year it was made. Often the WWII-issued ones are a little more $ than a post war. You should also find out about the condition and actually look at it before you agree to a trade. As far as trapdoors go, I've seen them go for $500 (absolute junk), to $2000 (Exellent Relic condition). I don't know if trying to sell the trapdoor for cash is a good idea, because it might take you a long time to sell. Then you'll get aggravated, and end up giving it away for a lot less than you wanted to.

Overall, I would say a pretty good trade if the Garand is in good condition, as it is a more shootable rifle, but on the contrary, you lose a nice antique in exchange for something new-er.

If both parties think they are getting a good deal, then it is a good deal for those parties involved, regardless of anything else

Alright, thanks for the suggestions. My uncle told me that it would be best to trade for a week and take a look at the rifles, then come back and make a decision.

The problem with 45-70 for me is that I don't reload (yet) and 45-70 costs a lot near me (Chicago metro area). Ill get some information and come back to let you all know!

Yes, that would be the best idea. Reloading is almost a must if you ever want to shoot a Trapdoor, but not so with a Garand.
