I've always wanted a M1 Garand! And, now I may have an opportunity to buy one from an old family friend. However, I'm clueless when it comes to the different variants and values of this legendary battle rifle. I would appreciate any advice on what to look for, as well as information on the value of such a gun.

Here are the specifics...

M1 Garand
Receiver/Barrel made by International Harvester
Other parts made by Springfield Armory
Serial Number: 4544xxx
Manufacture Date: 1953
Condition: I don't know the official condition designation, but it seems better than average. The stock, receiver, and barrel have some light to moderate wear/scratches. The gas tube/bayonet lug is more worn/scratched up then the rest of the rifle. The barrel rifling is good, but its not shinny and may have minimal pitting.

Thanks so much for your help! :D

Without knowing much more, it sounds like a $1,000 - $1,200 rifle. IHC rifles are somewhat more collectable because of their relative rarity.

I'd pay 1,200 for an IHC with more IHC parts were the condition good enough. Just be set for the cost to get the rest of the components should you ever wish to fully bring it around. Also, get to know the fake parts by sight.

Throat, bore and to a lesser degree - muzzle condition are critical with regards to an IHC's value as sourcing premium replacement barrels can be problematic.

Being a huge fan of IHC rolling stock (Scouts, Pick-Ups and vintage Loadstars not to mention the Ag line) I have that and one of my other industrial favorites in the form of the Garand in a fine overlapping of obsessions.

For me they're second only to a complete Beretta in "buy it at most any reasonable price" status.

Look inside the stock channel, is anything stamped there?
From the condition of the bore sounds like a $800 rifle, dark pitted bore is really going to hurt value Really need pics to give a more accurate estimate

Go to the CMP sales web site and read the descriptions of the various greased (Rack grade, field grade, service grade, etc).

It would give you an idea of how to rate the rifle.

The IHC's, even a "mixmaster", do command a premium over the Springfield and HRA built M1's. They probably also get a premium over the Winchester versions.

I am afraid, I have no idea what the premium is. The CMP forum would be a better place to ask though.

cfullgraf,
Why is that , dont you think anyone here knows anything about Garands????

There are many CMP forum members here, but not all.

THR is a great forum, but a jack of all trades while the CMP forum is more specific.

More information from a variety of sources yields better results.
