Hi all,

I've been lurking around THR for a while so it's about time I register and post a message.:)

I was in the local pawn shop today and looked at a Astra revolver chambered in 38 special. A 960 I think. Is this a decent revolver? I went through all the steps posted in the revolver check up and it seemed to be alright. The gun is blued with wood grips. The screw head on the grips looks a little beat up and there are some scratches on the grips.

I am very new to guns and trying to learn more. I bought a .22 savage rilfe and now I'm looking to find a good first handgun.

any advice would be great

IIRC, those Astra revolvers were pretty fair guns. They were no S&W, but were on a par with Taurus. The problem is that the company is out of business and parts may be scarce or unobtainable.

Still, if the price is right, and the gun checks out, it might be OK.

I own an Astra .44. Works well but hard (impossible?)to get parts and accessories. Unless its real cheap I'd look for something with a better name. Lots of police trade ins floating out there.

$249?

My personal recommendation is don't do it. If you go to some gun shows you should be able to find some better make pistols in decent shape easily. Assuming things aren't too different between here and PA. BTW I assume from the price that must be a new Astra, if it isn't that price is laughable. I bought my brand new 44 mag years back when they were still in business for about that price. Good luck in whatever you decide.:)

Reread your post, definitely not worth that used.

Just a thought

Southern Ohio Gun is selling brand new Ruger .357 for $230. You'll pay more with the shipping and FFL transfer but it's brand new, a Ruger, and you can shoot .357 or .38 out of it. Just a thought.
