For the last few years I have always had to remind my wife to please take her gun with her in the car when she's going out in the evening. She teaches classes at the gym nearby and is often at the gym after dark. That was sort of the compromise, she didn't carry it with her to work or while she was running errands during the day but she would keep it in her car for any night trips. She never really cared much for getting her Concealed Carry Permit but never found time to go get it either.
A few weeks ago a situation occurred while we were out for the evening that really shook her up. Luckily we were together and I was armed or the outcome could have been drastically different than it turned out. I decided not to preach at her but instead reassured her that I really wanted her to be safe and aware of her surroundings and to at least think about the consequences of being alone and unarmed in a similar situation. Later that week she told me that she was going to go get her CCW but that she never really felt comfortable with her P3AT and that it was difficult to rack and was too finicky with ammo.
I was extatic and told her that I would gladly let her choose any gun I owned for her to carry and she said, "Nah, I want my own. I want it to be MINE". We went shopping that weekend and she settled on a snub nosed, J-Frame. We shot 3 different guns made from 3 different materials (Steel, Aluminum and plastic) and she decided on the aluminum framed models. I wanted her to get a DAO with no hammer but she wanted the option of SA for now. We narrowed it down to either a Taurus 85 Ultralight or a Charter Arms Undercover. In the end, the Charter's anodized pink frame won out over the pink grips of the Taurus.
We put around 100 rounds through her gun over the weekend and I was impressed with the little revolver. It was loud but had surprisingly light recoil. The grips were light but well padded and my wife shot nice 4"-5" groups at 15' in mixed DA/SA shooting.
I stripped it down and cleaned it tonight and it is a really solidly built gun as far as I can tell. The timing was correct and cylinder lockup was tight. Trigger break is crisp and the trigger smoothed out nicely after about 75 rounds. I think the little bit of "grittiness" I was feeling was the finish on the cylinder against the locking pin. It wore down smooth and the trigger felt much better. I will definitely be ordering the bobbed hammer from Charter as my wife was very comfortable in either mode. We chose 129gr Federal Hydra-Shok JHP as a personal defense round for now. I also bought a box of 130gr Winchester PDX1 to try out.
She really loves the gun and is serious about carrying it. We need to look at holsters for her this weekend. I gotta say, I never thought I'd buy a pink gun but like they say... if mama aint happy aint nobody happy. Well, mama's happy and if having a pink gun makes her carry more then PINK it s.
