I'm curious as to how and why people carry their knives. A majority of the people that I know that carry knives carry in their strong side front or back pockets. There are others who carry weak side front or back pockets. There are those who carry both strong and weak side. There are even some that carry fixed blades in holsters either strong or weak side. How do you guys carry yours and why? What tactical advantages warrant that carry position? What tactical disadvantages are there to carrying a certain way? I personally carry either strong side front or back pocket, sometimes both.

You'll figure out what you like...sounds like maybe you have. I carry a pocket knife stongside, with a larger lock blade with pocket clip same side. Also always carry a multitool on my belt, same side.

How do you guys carry yours and why?

Horizontal at the small of my back. Some call it scout carry.

Plus a SAK in my front pocket.

It keeps my knife out of the way of other stuff that might be on my belt. Doesn't snag on thick brush when I am playing in the woods. Easy to conceal if I want to.

What tactical advantages warrant that carry position? What tactical disadvantages are there to carrying a certain way?

None....I don't think of my knife as a defensive weapon. I could use it as one,but that use doesn't decide how/why I carry it.

I carry a slip joint, sodbuster or trapper in left front pocket (Kahr .380 in right front pocket) and a Sypderco Endura clipped IWB right front. I don't consider my knives as "tatctical." Carry mode determined in part by access to the Kahr.

I normally wear Dickie's carpenter's pants, and carry my knife clipped inside the outside "tool pocket" on the right thigh. Surefire 6PX, pen, and sharpie on the inside pocket.

With regular Wranglers, that I wear maybe once a week, its clipped to the strong (right) side front pocket most of the time. Sometimes IWB at about 1:00, depending on what little ones are climbing on me.

I usually carry a medium sized fixed blade horizontally at about 11 o'clock. Doesn't snag on things, easy to reach when I need it.

I should mention I only carry a fixed blade when in the sticks, all other time I carry a folder clipped to my strong side back pocket. The only reason is that I don't like having things in my front pockets and it's quick to reach for. Downside is I've found it fallen out a few times at restaurants/etc.

Before tac knives w clips,I used to carry a Case Shark Tooth in my right front pocket behind my wallet. Now I carry in my right hip pocket.Small knife like a Sodbuster JR in my left front pocket with keys, change ect.

It Depends

While the short answer is "it depends," there is a "usually" configuration. [post=4824918]Earlier discussion here[/post].

I wear a Leatherman Wave at 4 o'clock on belt. Pretty much always. It's handy, easy to reach, easy to stow.

I wear a full-sized folder at about 9 o'clock, depending on where the belt loops are. It's an adapted horizontally mounted nylon pouch with a Velcro flap that opens either to the front or back (usually front). Handy position, easily reached. The cell phone rides on the right, so this knife rides on the left. In this pouch, depending on the day of the week or upon whatever activities are expected, you will find one of these: Case Sod Buster (lg), EKA/Normark Swede 92, Buck 110, EKA Nordic T8, Buck Vantage, NRA Outdoor 12700 Steigerwalt, Buck 110 EcoLite, Kershaw Northside. The Vantage is the smallest of the "full sized" folders and the Northside is at the high end. My favorite in this position is the EKA Swede 92.

The Leatherman and EKA Swede 92 look like this:

Various pockets . . .

I pretty much always wear cargo pants any more. In the right-hand thigh pocket, I keep a leather glove pouch with at least an EKA/Wenger SAK, and sometimes a Stockman or similar folder. The glove also carries the flashlight, eye drops, and tweezers (not shown), and a flash thumb drive.

Right front, Fisher Space Pen (collapsible) and folder du jour. In the photo, it was a Case Peanut. Today, it's a Buck 301 Stockman (yellow).

Left front, keys to various things. Car, house, mailbox, that kind of thing.

Left thigh, wallet. I used to carry the wallet in a hip pocket, until my chiropractor started giving me a hard time about sitting on it. Now it rides outrigger, where it can't add stresses to the spine.

Shirt pocket, various cards, a flat (Fresnel) magnifier, and a Fisher Space pen, or other pen that takes the Fisher refill. Today it's the County Comm Embassy Pen (black). Mine's aluminum; they now also make stainless and a solid copper version.

The basic make-up and layout have not changed in more than three years. I've tried a few different layouts, and this is the one I've adopted, because I can reach for whatever I need without having to give it much thought. I live and work in a geek's world, so my applications tend to be lighter work, food, and packaging. My Leatherman gets used to trim nails as much as anything else.

The knives change from time to time. Also, because some of my cargo pants have an extra pocket either inside or outside the main thigh pocket, there will often be another knife there (today it's a Kershaw Packrat on the left; yesterday it was a Buck Revel).

If you want to calculate the combinations, there are three knives that rotate.
Full-sized folder: seven or eight possibilities;
Right front folder: at least ten possibilities;
Extra pocket Folder: at least six possibilities.
I'm sure someone could construct a grid representing all the possible combinations. I would simply mess that up by adding a new knife or two.

Oh, there's a Case Sod Buster Jr (yellow, CV) that rides in my jacket pocket, regardless of whether I'm using the jacket. Since it's winter, you can add that knife to the list.

Your pants fall down a lot?
I have gotten to wearing a vest or jacket depending on the season for pockets to get some of the load off my waist. But my folder clips to the right hip pocket because there is a small handgun in the front pocket. I seldom if ever carry multiples, puts me too much in mind of Alice and the White Knight.

What tactical disadvantages are there to carrying a certain way?
No offense intended toward anyone who carries small of back (IE, SOB carry or scout carry), but it just isn't a great idea. If you've never had a back injury, OP, be grateful; and do whatever you can to ensure that you never do. Back injuries can be extremely debilitating and mind-bogglingly painful, even when they're only related to muscles, and not the spine itself.

Any fall you take when carrying anything SOB/scout is going to be much more likely to result in a back injury. Find another way to carry your gear. It's not worth it.

I like 11 o'clock (I am right handed) for a Clinch Pick, attached on a G-clip. A Ka-bar TDI or similar knife, or even a push dagger, would work equally well.

Advantages:
-Easy and comfortable to conceal a small knife
-Ambidextrous access
-Minimal articulation of shoulder, wrist, and elbow = more robust access
-Natural easy access if bear-hugged, choked, etc
-Can be carried in sweats or w/o belt if using a g-clip

Disadvantages:
-None per se, only that I think a SD knife should be purpose dedicated, so I have to carry a second utility knife. I choose to clip a Native 5 in my side pants pocket for task work.
-Can only be carried on a belt if using a Tek-Lok
-Need a good sheath (costs extra if you don't buy a knife that comes with a high quality sheath)

(Not my pic.)

For me, whatever edged tools I'm carrying that day go RH appendix (2 o'clock) and LH behind hip (8 o'clock). Both waistband carry. FWIW.

Which Handed?

It's probably relevant, when specifying where things ride on belt or in pocket, to mention whether you're right or left handed.

My carry is arranged for right-handed access.

Carry a small fixed in the same position at Conwict , been carrying one in that position for many years. Started carrying a BM210 like that , then a Rinaldi Matrix , now one of my own.

Easy to get to position that is out of the way of my carry gun as well as the spare mag.

Same as Conwict and JTW.. 11 o'clock.

gives me a weak hand draw right under the hem of my shirt.. or strong hand cross draw. Had a local leather store sew on a wrap around strap of harness leather on my CRKT Killbuck.

Strong hand front pocket is either a CRKT M16 or M21 variant ... and a Leatherman Clipit on my belt in a BBC case.

I'm still looking at a Benchmade Barrage.. it's between that and the new Spyderco.

I carry a knife in ONE of the following positions:

A: A clipless folder goes in weak side back pocket.
Pros: Comfortable, hidden
Cons: Slow to access

B: A clipped folder hooks in weak side pocket. (My fave)
Pros: Quick access, hidden, protected
Cons: Damages jeans pocket, interferes with cell phone access

C: Multi-tool in holster at weak side hip.
Pros: Accessible, protected
Cons: "printing", heavy

BTW: That glove holster looks kinda nifty! I have a pile of gloves that are too small for my hands, might make an interesting project.

Clipped in right front pocket, right next to my hand.

Years ago, I was standing in line at a liquor store counter.
Next thing I knew, some 300 pound drunk behind me wrapped me in a bear hug and picked me clear off the floor!

My Spydeco Endure snapping open next to his crotch got his attention so fast he dropped me and backed peddled over a beer display.

Turned out, he mistook me for a friend.

Had his intension's been less friendly?
A knife in any other position would have been impossible to reach with both arms pinned down by my sides.

I've usually got one clipped to my strong side front or rear pocket (usually the rear pocket), as well as one on my weak side rear pocket and another folder in the front strong side pocket. I tend to use knives a lot throughout the day.
