An excerpt from the article:

A brewing scandal at the Department of Justice involving an illegal scheme to pad statistics on U.S. guns in Mexico threatens to erupt as U.S. Senator Charles Grassley of the Senate Judiciary Committee begins an investigation. ATF agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives--a DOJ agency--allegedly smuggled U.S. guns into Mexico in order to bolster the Department's disputed contention that Mexican drug cartels are armed primarily with U.S. guns.

If these allegations prove true... :cuss:

Interesting. Maybe they were working with the CIA since they already have experience smuggling cocaine into the country? :p

The Department of Justice has already been critical of BATFE's "Project Gunrunner," saying it has focused on straw purchasers rather than going after those higher up the food chain.

Frankly, I think the government has way too many law enforcement agencies. They aren't coordinated, communicate poorly and often work at cross purposes with each other. Worse, they are too susceptible to being used for political purposes not related to enforcing the law. It's not ever going to happen, but the entire federal law enforcement system needs to be overhauled from top to bottom.

Having left employment with the Justice Department, partially out of frustration for the mismanagement, I sadly concur with your assessment.

My prediction however is that those involved will be promoted and moved to another location at our expense. No criminal charges or demotions will be forthcoming if past history is any indicator.

Isn't this obviously just a conspiracy theory?

If such a plan existed, let alone was carried out, surely they couldn't keep it a secret from everyone - there would be just too many people involved.

Quote below is an excerpt from the Washington Times article.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/feb/14/sen-grassley-probes-border-agent-slaying/

"Mr. Grassley said the ATF had been tracking Avila‘s firearms purchases since November 2009 and while at least one Arizona gun dealer wanted to stop participating in sales “like those to Avila,” the ATF encouraged the dealer to continue selling to suspected traffickers and asked the dealer to forward information about the sales to the ATF."

I certainly hope the FFL Dealer in question had this "encouragement" in writing and filed away with his lawyer and being held in an undisclosed safety deposit box.
