ATF Elimination Act

Don't they go on recess tomorrow effectively ending the session except for emergencies?

Yup, looks like election time for our Representatives is near.

Gives the members of Congress needing a last minute local attention getter and (if they are sober enough to attend)
a chance to jump on board and look good for their constituency.

ATF - like all other Government 'protection and security' entities has grown since 9/11
and I expect there is a better chance of repealing the 1934 NFA laws than of
any of my State's Representitives voting for this one.

Interesting read though.

The only way they would get rid of the ATF is if they consolidated it into another agency. Think Italian Carabinieri. One agency multiple functions instead of multiple agencies performing different functions.
Even if they got rid of it the FBI or someone else would take over.

Precisely what the bill is asking - let the DEA handle alcohol and tobacco. In that regard it comes to mind the BATF is really highly duplicative.

Most of the firearms issues pop up from the people who intend to use them, plenty of scope in Homeland to cover that. Which leaves the specific provisions of the '34 NFA, and '68 GCA, most of which are administrative - inspecting FFL's and issuing tax stamps.

Neither have prevented the misused of firearms or prevented illegal sales, but that's a different discussion. Those duties could go to the IRS - :what:

More to the point, it cuts down on government waste, which as we should all agree, needs it.

This idea was kicked around quite a number of years ago, and again after Waco. The FBI and DEA seemingly would have taken on the duties but didn't want the personnel.
