ATF stats on compliance inspections

Fun with statistics......

jbh13 Interesting stat: 1,373 businesses closed in 2010

Not as obvious as it seems.
Example:
When renewal time comes for my 01FFL (dealer) I may choose to let it expire and get an 07FFL (manufacturer).
It would skew those results. same as if in a partnership was sold to a corporation, and so on.

It's kinda hard to read between the lines on a report like this.

Speaking of all businesses; something like 9 out 10 close in the first 5 years anyway. Don't get to worked up over the businesses closed stat. Most due to bad decisions on the business owners part. I started 4 or 5 before I started making my own living, and I was lucky according to the stats I should have had to start 7.

I think it's more interesting to see the "no violations" trending steadily upward while revocations and conferences were dropping. They may have changed standards, but it looks like FFL's are becoming more aware of compliance issues, which is probably a main goal of the ATF inspections. It looks like you're more likely to just get a letter now.

Out of 10,000+ inspections that's almost 15% of license holders. Just saying it was an interesting stat that they put in the report. Even if that number was half true, it just shows a sign of our economic times.

I also find it quite interesting that they include 'out of business' inspections right along with everything else. I know it's a report of all inspections but it is also, IMO intentionally misleading. If you just look at the "No violations" numbers, a reasonable person might think that only 50% of FFL's are complying with the law.

Similar to the way NICS 'stats' are reported. You get a completely different idea of what the 'real' numbers are if you skip the pretty slides and dig into the number themselves!

A friend is in the movie prop business. He has a class 7 and explosives licenses. I can't believe all the stuff he has to go through year after year. The ATF not only inspects to their regulations, they check to the state and local regs. And most of the time they are wrong on the state and local laws. To get the ATF to approve he also has to get the state to come in, inspect, and tell the ATF they are wrong.
