I received this scope a few weeks ago to start LR shooting and 300yard matches. Mounted on a savage bolt action with 30mm Medium Warne Maxima rings. This scope is being compared to a Vortex Crossfire 6-18, Leupold VX2, Nikon Prostaff and a Bushnell I had on hand. Even though the Argos is more magnification than the other scopes its still a scope IMO so we will go over the comparison of turrets, clarity, tracking, eye relief, size, weight, and quality.

Others vs Argos:

Turrets: Argos turrets are made of either steel or aluminum and appear to be very well machined and tight. The Argos beats Vortex, Nikon and Bushnell in this aspect. I have used Diamondbacks and Vipers and their turrets have some wiggle to them and just seem like cheap materials. Nikon has plastic turrets with wiggle and even my Vx2 has plastic turrets with some wiggle. The Argos has 0 wiggle in the turret, positive clicks that are very audible and very nice machined marks for elevation and windage.

Clarity:
In terms from best to worst in clarity the Argos is right up there with my Vx2. I took the Argos outside about 20min before dusk and was able to read a houses for sale sign and address about 700-800 yards away. I would put the Argos glass on par with the Vx2. Definitely clearer than a Crossfire and a hair clearer than a Diamondback.

Tracking:
The Crossfire, Nikon and Bushnell all give me issues with tracking. I can adjust the turret and they aren't very precise, being off about 1/2 to a full 2'' sometimes. The Vx2 seems to be the only one out of the current line up that tracks true. I twist turrets with the Crossfire 6-18 for hunting and target shooting and seldom get it to come back to the exact spot. Its always within 1/2'' or so. We will see how the Argos compares later today.

Eye relief: The Argos is better than the Crossfire on a bench but standing the Nikon, Crossfire and Bushnell beat the Argos. Leupold trumps them all. The Argos doe's have a slight issue getting setup and not seeing a black halo but that's to be expected with a 40x. On the bench its fine but standing its very hard to see through.

Size/Weight: The Argos is a beast! Its large, heavy, and has huge turrets. I like large and heavy for a bench shooting scope because it adds weight to the rifle. The turrets are huge which I also like. It makes them easier to see and grab. I do think its a little too long because with a sun shade installed its very close to the muzzle of a 22'' barrel. But its gives that tacticool looks to it also.

AO/SF: The SF is very crisp and accurate compared to the AO of the Crossfire and the SF of the Bushnell. Heck, even my Simmons 6-20-40 AO is nicer quality than the Crossfire. Its very stiff and the markings are nicely engraved and large.

Quality: This scope is quality IMO. From the turrets, glass, clean lines, large adjustments, etc. I would put its quality right up there with the VX2. It definitely makes the Crossfire look like a Wal-Mart clamshell special. I haven't sighted it in yet but I would say right now its on par with my Vx2 in terms of clarity, quality, and eye relief. I do think its better than the Diamondback Tactical which is similar in price to this scope.

All in all I would say its a huge upgrade over my Crossfire II 6-18-44. I will give a further review of the sighting in and tracking later.

Sighted the scope in today and tracking seems to be good. I forgot a box of “good load” ammo and only had 5 rounds to get on paper and zero. Turrets are good. The parallax setting is a little off. It needs to be between 75 and 100yards to be clear. I do need to move it back a hair to fit my eyes better. I did have it out until 30min before dark and was able to zoom in on a woodchuck about 1k yards away at 40x. I did get some hazing at 40x when shooting 1” orange dots at 100yards. Not sure what that’s all about. More to come next week on tracking and proper eye relief.

I have an Argos 8-34X56 on a Model 10 and used it this winter to shoot a local rifle league at ranges of 100/200/300yds. It did better than I did.

After shooting this with a FFP at 1" dots to 300yds I am convinced. Am now putting together a Model 11 and it will most likely get a 6-24X50 model as I have yet to use the 34X except for spotting.

I have also compared this scope side by side with Vortex Vipers and I still like the Athlon more.

I’m very impressed.

Hopefully taking it to 300yards tomorrow.
300yards was not doable today. Wind was whipping pretty good but mostly coming from straight behind me. I also didn’t feel like walking 600 yards several times to fix the target that kept blowing around. I spent the last 5 days walking around DC so even the trips hanging and removing targets were fun so no way I wanted to chase targets at 300yards.

I had several loads of varmint rounds and decided to write down my turret numbers for each combo and then adjusted back to the number for the previous load and check tracking. Tracking was pretty decent. I did get some stringing cause of a hot barrel. My buddy said he had to leave in 12min so I shot a couple quick groups without cool down. I’d say the scope did pretty decent. Not bad for a 200yard group if I do say so myself. Bottom target was playing with tracking and 2 different combos. Top target was playing with 200yard tracking and a 5 shot group. The one flier top left was my 5th shot. Go figure. My buddy has a Midas and I couldn’t tell a difference in glass. All in all I am very please with the scope. And a big thanks for LiveLife for the scope. I hope to get some more SMK testing done for the 300yard matches and compete a bit. I talked to a member of that club tonight and he said they haven’t been doing them so not sure if it’s been delayed or not.

An update on the Argos tracking. I started at 100yards and tested several different combos of 223rem. I did not shoot for groups as my main objective was to test tracking from 100-300yards and back to 100yards. I set the scope between 24 and 40 magnification going back and forth and did notice they opened up a bit when using 40x. Its very hard to steady the crosshair at such high magnification at 100-200yards. Once I established a 100yard zero with the right target, bottom right diamond I moved to the left diamond. First shot was yellow, adjusted the scope down to the green circle and then back up to finish with the purple circles. In the center I checked zero again in the center bull with 2 shots and moved the crosshairs down in the yellow circle and then back up to the green circle. Tracking was spot on.

Left target was 200yards. I verified my hits in the center target and adjusted up to shoot the 2 just above the center bull using 55gr Nosler. I traded the Nosler for 50gr V max and fired at the top left diamond. First two hits were high and to be expected due to the higher velocity (green circle) and adjusted down with into the diamond (yellow circle). To verify the 50gr zero at 200yards I fired at the upper right diamond and bottom right diamond. I switched back to the 55gr Nosler and aimed at the bottom tip of the center diamond which shot 1'' low. I adjusted to my 200yards zero for the 55gr Nosler and shot the bottom left diamond group.

Even though these are not spot on to where I was holding the dot on the crosshair we did have some wind coming over my right shoulder. I will say that's more shooter error than the scope. Turret clicks were very audible, I could feel them very well and lined up with the lines on the scope. The only real complain I have is parallax does not match the scopes markings. 100yards needs to be closer to 75yards and 200yards needs to be almost 300yards.

Nice!

And I am sure Athlon will fix it right.
Not a big deal for me. My old Vortex was a little off for me as well. It may be my eye sight.

I have access to a huge valley I can shoot in all the way to 1k yards. Once it dries out a bit I will take it out to 500-600yards.

On very few scopes do the marks line up for me, and often enough i have to adjust the actual object lense to get enough adjustment to shoot at longer ranges.

I had never heard of Athlon until I was in the market for a new pair of binoculars in 8x40. I compared them to Nikon, and Leoupold and found them brighter and the eyecup adjustments beat both and the price was much lower than either of them. I used them on a bear hunt scanning beech tree tops for feeding bears. To say I was impressed is an understatement. I plan on trying one of their scopes soon. I am a hunter , not a target shooter so it will be a lower powered scope but it is good to read a users review.

Take a look at the Argos HMRs and Midas HMR. Ive had a few of the former (currently 1) and one of the later.
They are on the heavier side, but beyond that they are excellent. My current Argos HMR is a 4-20x50 and has sucked up a couple hundred shots from my savage 10ML-2 driving 325s at 2300fps, no zero shift or other issues at all.

Played around with making dope cards for 3 different bullets yesterday and the tracking is spot on. I sent several rounds of 55gr 223 and set my turret. Switched to 50gr and set the turret. Switched to 69gr and then back to the settings for the other weights. I also went from 100-200-300 and each time I went back to the number needed for the load it was spot on.

Again I have the 8-34X56 and find the same you just posted.
Also even at 300yds shooting at 1" targets I find I need no more than 30X.

Now I am looking at another Athlon in the 6-24 range and thinking maybe a Helos.
